Student Interviews - Year 7/8

Introducing Brynn J, Bu G and Tyson W from the Wexford Campus!

Today we'll be talking about math, seed, and English as well as impact!

Tyson

So in math, we do mainly 2 programs. That they include essential assessment and math pathways. In essential assessment, we mainly use that for testing and, like, seeing where we're at in certain tasks. This term, we've been learning about Algebra and we’re moving onto Data. So we've done, I think, 3 tests on Algebra and some class lessons as well.

We do a pretest, a middle test, and a post test to see where we are at for that. And we also do a thing called math pathways, which is where we do modules. We have to do 5 modules in a cycle, and a cycle normally takes around about 2 weeks to complete.

These modules offer us a range of different learning activities for us to complete. Once we’ve done these, they go onto our next cycle test.

In Term 4, I am looking forward to starting to transition to Year 9 at Goldsworthy. We will be doing a lot of work towards that next term.

Bu Gay

In SEED we've been doing different types of sport. Uh, last term, we were doing badminton, basketball, and volleyball. This term, we're doing tennis, baseball, softball, and that's all.

My favourite is baseball, because I get to learn new things.

I also like that we get to represent our school and versus other schools. This year, for volleyball year 8, we're going to the next level of competition. So we're playing in Melbourne, I'm pretty sure. Versing a whole bunch of different Melbourne schools in the next couple of weeks. I am not sure where that is going to be held.

In Term 4 I am looking forward to getting ready for Year 9 at the Goldsworthy campus. I don’t know what I will be doing at SEED.

Brynn

In English, we are reading a book called Wonder and we are studying the text so then we can publish an essay about the book. We have 3 different categories for the essay, ranging from easy to hard. We can choose from the following topics linked to a which are linked to a key theme. They are “overcoming challenges”, “family dynamics”, and “power of acceptance”. So in each one, it's like kind of its own category. In overcoming challenges, it's basically about the main character, Auggie and how all the challenges that he's faced throughout his life.

Family Dynamics is about the older sister, Via and how her life is as Auggie is basically the main character and how she is kind of left to the side. The power of acceptance is about how he becomes more accepted throughout his school community and how people have come to actually appreciate him as a person.

I am looking forward to my last term at impact in Term 4. I don't really know what's gonna be happening. But we just finished, um, either doing drawing or painting.  I was part of the drawing group where we would get a sketchbook and we would just, like, draw a picture in front of us. For our final to get our project done, we had to just draw. So I just personally like to draw a character that I like from a show.

Meet Ashmeet B, Ethan I and Eellee A from the Tallis Campus!

What do you want to talk about today?

Ethan:I want to talk about SEED today. So every Friday morning from 9 to around 10:30am, we select these sports that we wanna do for a term and you try out for a team. Then we go to these places in which have, like, professional coaches and they teach you.

They can do it, like, like, sort of, like, personally or, with everyone. For this term, I've chosen baseball. Last term was table tennis. And my first term was badminton. If you do get into the team, you compete with other colleges.

My favourite sport out of the 3 I've done so far, I would say baseball.

Ashmeet: I want to talk about SEED as well. I just started tennis. So instead of, like, being for, like, the 1st and 2nd period, it goes for, like, the whole day. Yeah. You get to do, like, a bunch of other stuff. Like, sometimes you go, like, ice skating and swimming.

And they have, like, basically Friday SEED at Goldsworthy on a Wednesday as well. So you pick your sport, you make the team and then once you're, like, done doing the sport and seed, which goes for the, uh, 3rd and 4th session, you either head back to here to do or you do a spin class on the gym bikes there for, like, 25 minutes?

Eellee: I’m going to talk about The Happiest Refugee. We have to read the book and write a summary for each chapter and put character and themes. Some of the themes we have to write an essay for include kinship, sticking up for each other.

We also read Holes. It's, like, about, like, this kid got framed for doing something that he didn't do, so he got sent to, like, a juvenile camp, and he had to dig, like, a 6-foot hole every day in the desert. Once we were done with the all the questions, and doing essays about it, we watched the movie.

What are you all looking forward to in term 4?

Ethan:I’m looking forward to the transition into the Goldsworthy Campus because we do, like, a week at Goldsworthy, and then we get used to our timetables and whatever. We are all going to Goldsworthy!

Ashmeet: Probably graduation! There's, like, electrical plant thing, and there's a building near it. Like, all the kids from Wexford, Hendy, Peacock, and Tellis, they go there with their parents and all that, and you'll be up on the stage. And then they'll have, like, your prep photo and then your graduation photo, which we just recently did. Then you get your graduation certificate or something. It’ll be fun.

Eellee: Probably our excursion to Adventure Park.

Educational Research Projects at Hendy

On Tuesday, the 7/8 community at Hendy hosted their term 3 Educational Research Projects (ERPs). The theme for the day was centred around how the availability and safety of water affects people. The students did a fantastic job of making the afternoon an informative and interactive occasion for students and teachers alike.

Year 9

Student Interview - Year 9

Meet Samuel L and Hanin M in Year 9. They sat down with us to discuss what their Term 3 involved!

Samuel

What have you done this term? Give us a couple of highlights.

Um, I've done, you know, various, like, activities like seed and that. Like, seeds, like, sports program that we do over here. I've been on, like, club excursions and stuff and, like, yeah, just been doing, like, different activities and all.

What type of sports do you do in SEED?

I play mainly basketball.

Seed's fun. I've been doing it pretty much all year. It's really fun to do, and then, we do lots of drills and that. I probably will do it next year.

Did you enjoy life changer? What is Life Changer?

So in life changer, we had these 2 people come up and speak to us, and then their main point was, self-esteem, and what do you think self-esteem is, and how we can find self-esteem if we're like, we don't really have any.

We did, like, various activities and they seemed fun and all, but, really, they have a different meaning. They're, like, how we view life and stuff, and they gave us, like, wristbands and other things. It was cool. It was a really fun experience. It was just like doing activities out of, like, a deeper meaning in that. It was really it was really fun.

Did you have any excursions this term?

Yeah. Um, last week, I went to wheelchair basketball and, um, can't remember if I had any in-school competitions earlier in the term. And that's pretty much it. I just did wheelchair basketball.

How was that different to how you normally play basketball?

When I'm shooting, normally, my legs are the main source of power I use. So without my legs, it's really hard to shoot. It’s all upper body strength. I have a lot of respect for people who play wheelchair basketball. I had lots of fun with my class on that.

Finally, what are you looking forward to in term 4?

Term 4? More excursions at the end of the year, and, SEED, so just the regular stuff, honestly!

Hanin

What have you done this term? Have you got any highlights?

Um, this term, the highlight, was beyond borders. Yeah. I've never done beyond borders. It's something I tend to enjoy. We did, like, a big debate. Yeah. I think we won. Irwin won. We debated about phones at school and should we have a different uniform.

What is Beyond Borders?

Beyond Borders, like, geography, like, around the world. It's, the whole wide earth and things that happen in ancient times.

Do you play any Sports?

I really enjoyed SEED. I've been to 3 schools, and they haven’t had anything like SEED there and I didn't know, any sports at all. So, when I got went to seed, I found, like, a sport I tend to enjoy.

What sport is that?

It was there's 2, basketball and soccer.

Did you attend the life changer sessions?

Yes. I did and I really enjoyed it because it was it, um, reminded me how people have different lives at the same time and not everyone's the same.

Have you had any excursions this year?

Um, I had, I think, one excursion. I went to this science lab for after school science. It was very fun. We talked about diseases, like, what happened, what they had to do to cure it.

What are you looking forward to in term 4?

Term 4, I'm looking forward to going up a level in my English vocab so I can get better!
