Vermont Secondary College
On Thursday 15th of August, Vermont Secondary College was pleased to welcome Professor Ku, Dean Shinhye Kim and 10 pre-service teachers of Keimyung University, a private university located in Daegu, South Korea. As part of their studies, they travelled to Australia to experience and learn the difference in educational curriculums, with a variety of pre-service teachers working to specialise in different areas such as English, early childhood education, physical education and languages. It was a great opportunity for our students to engage with and learn more about Korean culture through holding meaningful discussions with the teachers.
As the visitors first arrived at our college, we were able to provide a short tour of our school through exploring the N-wing, gymnasium, music room and many other areas. Particularly, the group was able to join in one of the Computing classes during period 3 and had to opportunity to talk with the students about what they were working on. As we observed how our school functioned during class time, the pre-service teachers were able to note the major differences in Australian and Korean schools.
Throughout lunch time, the Korean culture club joined our visitors in the library, where we were able to ask questions and socialise with the pre-service teachers whilst having a graciously prepared lunch. Everyone enjoyed good pizza and drinks and got to be engaged with a presentation that Keimyung University had prepared for us. Through the presentation, we learned about the National Liberation Day of Korea, geography, cultural meals, popular celebrities and K-Pop. Our students had a blast with the mini game that the pre-service teachers hosted, with many of the Korean culture club members winning prizes. It was a delight to watch everyone engage with each other and to learn about each other’s culture.
As period 4 rolled around, our visitors were split into small groups to participate in various classes, such as VCE English, Year 7 P.E and French. Although the group who were observing the French class were not able to fully participate due to the teacher’s absence, everyone was able to partake in the Year 7 P.E class. The group had a lot of fun joining with our Year 7’s who were learning to play touch rugby and were able to experience firsthand what our educational system is like regarding sports.
Overall, the day was an amazing experience for both the students at our school and Keimyung University. It was an honour to represent Vermont Secondary College and to work closely with students overseas. We are all very grateful for the preparation that went into arranging this event, and we look forward to greeting and hosting future visitors!

Last week Vermont Secondary College hosted visitors from Keimyung University in Daegu, South Korea. We learned about their culture and what holidays they had in their lovely country. In return we talked to them about Australian society and how we lived. It was a wonderful experience, and lunch, and we hope that they are able to visit again.
