Learning in Action

Literacy

Grade 5 students have been working really hard on their Passion Projects. We have a broad range of passions being written about, and presented, that showcase a mixture of creative writing and scrapbooking. We can’t wait to show them to the visitors on our Open Morning next week.

Check out some samples of the pages being created:

Maths

The last couple of weeks we have been learning about decimals. We have looked at how 1 whole number can be broken into 10 parts to show tenths, and then tenths can be broken into 10 parts again to show hundredths. We then started looking at how we can add or subtract decimal numbers.

As our LPS renovator groups are well underway, students have been busy trying to renovate a house. Students have a few rules to follow:

• You must not go over budget

• Do not change the structure of the house

• Each section must complement the next

• Be creative!

In each group of 4, each student is in charge of renovating 1 of the following areas:

  • Living Areas
  • Bedroom and Bathroom
  • Outside Entertainment and Living
  • Front yard and sides of the house

The main aim of this project is to collaborate with each other and discuss their ideas along the way. Our last two maths projects have also helped improve students' knowledge about spreadsheets and calculating costs.

Inquiry

On Wednesday, 6th December we held our LPS Market Day. What a success it was! We are so proud of the effort that our Senior School students went to to make this a successful day in raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation. We raised a total of……

$3784

Well done to everyone involved and thank you to all parents and staff for your support for this day. It was not only a fun day, but it enhanced our student’s learning about:

  • Entrepreneurialism
  • Financial Maths
  • Wants and Needs
  • Social Justice

Sport

The last three weeks Grade 5 students have been working hard during Bike Ed and building on their knowledge of skills they can use when riding their bikes. Some of these skills have included:

  • Emergency and non-emergency breaking
  • Riding in a straight line
  • Scanning
  • Slow riding
  • Sharp turns
  • Signalling and communicating

We look forward to putting these skills into practice during our bike ride on Monday to Wally Tew Reserve.

On Tuesday 5th December, some of our boys represented LPS at the Hooptime State Basketball competition. Although not all of the games went our way, the boys did LPS very proud, put everything they had into each game and played extremely well. It was a great day and the team is now in the top 20 out of 400 across our state, what an achievement!
