Introduction to The Resilience Project

This year we have introduced The Resilience Project lessons.

We are committed to teaching positive mental health strategies to build the children's capacity to deal with the everyday ups and downs.

Teachers and students will engage in weekly lessons and activities around the key principles of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness (GEM) and Emotional Literacy to build resilience.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Thank you to all the families who were able to come in for parent teacher interviews or making contact with us to arrange alternate times. It was a great opportunity to catch up with families and learn more about our students. Please feel welcome to pop in or email us at any time if you have any questions.

Library and Take-home Reading

As yet, we have not determined a set library day. Take home reading commences this week. Students are expected to read for at least 10-15 minutes each day. Reading materials will be changed every morning.

Water Bottles

Just a reminder it is important to pack water bottles so students can stay hydrated. Also please ensure that we are only bringing water to school. Juice boxes and primas are fine for home, but we want to avoid sticky messes on our furniture and equipment.

Curriculum

Literacy

We've had a great start to the year with our literacy. We've been focusing on our concepts about print and working on forming our sentences. We've been writing about our fantastic holidays. We've enjoyed writing some interesting facts about ourselves so we can learn more about our classroom diversity.

Mathematics

We have familiarised ourselves with the manipulatives (equipment) in the classroom, and explored how to use them. We have also used this as an opportunity to explore what it means to work with another person and how important it is to work as a team to achieve a goal. We discovered during partnered card games we had to listen to each other, take turns, follow the rules of the game even if we didn't like them and self umpire. In doing this, we worked out we could have lots of fun. Our first Unit of Maths is called, "About Me." We will be investigating days of the week, months of the year and seasons.

Religion

We start the year looking at the Mercy heritage of St John's. We learnt that the Sisters of Mercy orginated in Ireland by a nun called Catherine McAuley. The Sisters of Mercy would help lots of people, particularly women and children by sharing their resources and empowering them so that they could provide for their families. Below are some wonderful illustrations of our Mercy Sisters from the 1800s.

Inquiry - History

We are investigating how families have changed over time. Over the next two weeks we will be making a family tree, which includes parents, children and grandparents. We will be discussing how family members are related. We would love you have a chat with your child about the people in their family and bring along a photo to share with the class. We are happy for you to email us a photo for your child to share.

Each child will also be bringing home interview questions to ask an older person about their childhood. Please help you child to complete this and return it to school.

Bluearth

Our first session with Jimmy will be taking place this Friday, 10th of February. We are looking forward to seeing him, learning new games and practising our cooperative and self-umpiring skills.
