Swimming Trials for 2024 St Mary's Swim Team

We could not have asked for a better day for our swimming trials on Tuesday 5th December. Approximately 70 keen swimmers trialed for a spot in the St Mary's 2024 swim team. it was a fantastic day of competition and a bit of fun to end the day. All swimmers should be very proud of their efforts.

Swimmers chosen to represent St Mary's will compete at the Dendy Swimming Carnival on February 19th, 2024. Any parents who can assist with pre-training please contact Sam Sullivan.

Grade 5 and 6 Beach Cluster Day

Cluster day was as good as having ice cream. I mean if ice cream was that great cluster day is on another level. We learned a lot of exciting water safety exercises. It was also a good catch-up meeting kids from other schools and having different people to interact with. It was great learning but at the same time having fun too.

I have to admit I loved being able to catch up with St Finbars and St Joan of Arc students and learn lots of different water skills to help save lives while having fun. We got to learn things and what to do with life jackets in emergencies, Tube rescue, and boarding. On the land, we learned DRSABCD and the signs we see around the beach. I hope we will be allowed to do this again next year and have just as much fun as we did this year.

On the 4th of December, the Year 5 and 6 students walked down to the Hampton Life Saving Club. When we got there the year 5’s started heading back to school, so we just had to get ready and wait for St Joan of Ark and St Finbars. First St Joan of Ark arrived and we said hello to our friends, then came St Finbars and we said hello again to them. After that we were all put into 10 groups and rotated around 5 activities. The first one was learning about DRSABCD which is a medical acronym. Secondly, we learnt about signs on the beach for example a sign that has a person jumping onto a rocky surface means that there could be unknown objects under the water. Thirdly we learned how to use everyday beach objects like footy's, pool noodles and eskys. After that, we practised saving someone's life with a boogie board, and finally, we practised being stranded in the ocean with life jackets on, if you were to be stranded in the ocean you want to find other survivors adn form a circle by linking arms then you want to put pregnant or cold people in the middle. In my group I had Monty, Lewis, Liam, Andrew and Ava from our school and then two girls from St Joan of Ark. All in all it was a great day, I got to catch up with my friends from other schools and learn a bit more about life-saving.

Grade 5 Celebration Day

To celebrate our success at the Market Stalls earlier this Semester, students in Grade 5 enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of celebrations. Students enjoyed bubble soccer, hot chips, icy poles, and some sweet treats. Additional money raised from the stalls will go to a charity. Thanks to all the students for their efforts at the Market Stalls.

Thank you to all the families and staff who have supported St Mary's Sports in 2023. Looking forward to an even better Year in 2024.
