St Stephen’s won both the Premier Division and A Division competitions at the most recent Chess Competition in Cairns last week.

St Stephen’s Team 1: Tom Fenner, Patrick McCarthy, Christian Salvetti and Rhys Avolio held off some strong competition from the best seven teams in the Far North region to score the win by a narrow one point margin. Tom Fenner and Patrick McCarthy finished tied in fifth place on 4.5 points from a possible seven, which earned them both a merit ribbon. While Christian and Rhys both had solid days and finished on four points tied for eleventh place.

In Division A, St Stephen’s Team 2: Ruben Longakit, Angus Cahill, Ashley King and Alperen Pokharel were clear winners by three points. Ruben finished in first place in this division with an individual score of 6.5. Merit winners were Angus Cahill and Alperen Pokharel both finished on 5 points, as well as Jake Cook on 4.5 points.

This is one of St Stephen’s best ever results in the fifteen years of competing at these events. What makes this achievement even more impressive is the growing popularity of chess in the region. Nearly 300 high school students from 55 teams competed at this event across the three divisions, which drew students from 16 different secondary schools in the FNQ region.

A top 3 finish at the regional finals in Term 3 will secure the team an invitation to the State Finals in Brisbane in October. We wish the team the best of luck and would like to thank Mr Harnsichfeger for coaching them again this year.
