Netball Queensland Country Carnival
We extend our gratitude to the Mareeba Netball Association for providing this story, and congratulations to the students who took part in this competition!
Over the May Long weekend Mareeba Netball participated in the Queensland Country Carnival held in Townsville.
Over 60 teams from regional Queensland (and one team from the Northern Territory) participated in the event. Mareeba Netball entered a team into both the 14U and 16U division. Each of our teams played a total of ten modified game over the two day carnival, ultimately winning five of their games.
Our teams played to the best of their ability, they should be proud of themselves and the way they represented Mareeba Netball.
Mareeba Netball was represented by the following St Stephens students:
Mareeba Speedway
Earlier this month, Bray Taylor had a fantastic outcome in his first speedway race, securing third place in the Junior Sedan competition.
Bray has previously experienced success in go-kart racing, and before advancing to sedans, was ranked #1 in Queensland and #2 in Australia in the go-kart competition.
We look forward to hearing more about Bray’s journey as he continues to explore his passion for racing.
2025 Qld Golden Gloves Champions
Brothers Oliver and Austin Strickland showcased their incredible boxing skills at the statewide Golden Gloves event held in Townsville this year. Austin competed in the Juniors (15 to 16 years old), 71 to 75kg weight category (middleweight), and Oliver competed in the Juniors (15 to 16 years old), 63.5 to 67kg weight category (welterweight). Both Austin and Oliver won gold in their age and weight category for the weekend. They started competing last year and both boys have now had six bouts each. Austin has 5 wins, one loss, and Oliver has had 6 wins, no losses.
Both athletes have made our school proud as Golden Gloves Champions.
A special mention also to Thomas Gilbert who fought a division up in the Golden Gloves competition – which was a mighty effort.
2025 Northern Nats
Springmount Raceway roared to life from May 16-18 during the 2025 Northern Nats. Among the rising stars was Shyma Lelli who claimed runner-up in the Junior Dragster category.
Congratulations to Shyma on her outstanding achievement!

Ryan Pearce competed in level 7, achieving a great result of 5th place on Vault.
Olie Hampton also competed, achieving fantastic results by placing 1st on Floor, 2nd on Vault, and 5th Overall. Olie also was selected to represent Queensland in level 9 at the upcoming National Championships in the Gold Coast.
AFL Championships
Kobe Saxon and Luca Roulstone are currently representing our region at the AFL Championships taking place in Cairns.
Kobe is competing with the Junior Crocs with Luca representing the Senior Crocs Women's team. Great results for both so far with two wins each and both teams playing for a spot in the Grand Final.
We wish them the best of luck.
