Grade 4 Report

It’s hard to believe that the holidays are upon us already!
The teachers have really enjoyed the first term with this cohort of students and we are looking forward to Term 2 (as well as a little break).
A highlight of Term 1 was our excursion to Nangak Tamboree Wildlife Sanctuary at La Trobe University. The excursion complemented our Science Unit, which began by identifying the differences between living and non-living things, then looked at life cycles for a range of different living things.
The activities at the sanctuary were interesting and fun. Students used nets to fish minibeasts from the water in the wetland. We then got to look at them up close through microscopes and identify what had been found. The creatures were then returned to the water.
We learned about food webs, investigating the interconnectedness between all living things in a web, as well as the impacts of introduced species.
The sanctuary includes a wildlife reserve around the size of six MCGs! Walking through the enclosure, students had close encounters with a very friendly emu, a baby echidna burrowing for food, some possums and lots of birds. We saw plenty of nesting boxes for all sorts of animals and got to see how they are made specifically for the needs of these creatures.
The children loved the whole excursion (though some would have preferred the emu keep its distance!).
