Grade 3 Report

As we come to the end of an exciting term, it’s been wonderful to reflect on all the learning and fun we’ve had in Grade 3!

Our students have shown tremendous growth and enthusiasm, and we’re thrilled with their progress.

Earth Science – Making Sundials

As part of our Earth Science unit, we posed the question to the students: How did people tell the time before modern-day clocks? This burning question led us to the fascinating answer: sundials.

As the children have been learning about the sun's orbit and the Earth’s rotation, it was the perfect opportunity to bring this concept to life. Children designed and created their very own sundials. They explored how the position of the sun in the sky changes throughout the day, causing the shadow of the sundial’s straw (or gnomon) to move, indicating the time.

After several overcast days, we were finally able to test the sundials outside in the Melbourne sunshine! It was such an exciting moment as the students watched the shadows on their sundials shift throughout the day. The straws on their sundials cast clear shadows that corresponded to the correct time, much to the delight of the children. Some students even made additional adjustments to their sundials to improve their accuracy, demonstrating great problem-solving skills.

Maths – Measurement and Length

In Maths, Grade 3 has spent the last couple of weeks diving into measurement, with a particular focus on length. The students have explored various units of measurement and made decisions on which units are most appropriate to use in different contexts. They’ve also learned how to accurately use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the length of various classroom objects. In addition, the students were challenged to estimate lengths, helping them develop their estimation skills alongside their measuring abilities.

It has been fantastic to see the children build confidence in this area of mathematics, and they’ve done an excellent job applying their new skills. Whether measuring the length of their desks, books, or even the width of their classroom, the students have been eager to practise and share their findings.

We are so proud of all the hard work and dedication our Grade 3 students have shown this term. We’re excited to see how the children continue to grow in Term 2 and can’t wait for more learning adventures to come. Enjoy the holiday break!
