Online Safety for our Kids

Online Safety for Our Kids: Social Media, Cyberbullying,

and the Importance of Parental Guidance

In today’s digital world, many of our children are spending increasing amounts of time online. Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Discord and others have become a regular part of how they interact with their friends, share their lives, and explore new interests. While the internet offers many exciting opportunities for learning and connection, it also brings significant risks that we must be mindful of.

It's important to recognise that issues at school can sometimes carry over into the online world. Whether it's a disagreement between friends, misunderstandings, or bullying, what happens in the classroom or playground can extend into social media platforms and messaging apps. This can escalate problems and make them harder to resolve. We encourage students to address any concerns or conflicts they encounter both online and offline in a respectful and responsible manner and to seek help from an adult.

Age Restrictions for Social Media Accounts

Social media platforms have age restrictions; according to their terms of service, children under 13 are not allowed to create accounts. This is because these platforms are not designed to be safe for young users and may expose them to harmful content or interactions. It's essential that parents ensure they are not bypassing these restrictions and that they are only using social media when it is safe and appropriate for their age.

The Dangers of Cyberbullying

One of the biggest risks associated with social media is cyberbullying. Unfortunately, bullying has found its way onto the internet, and children can be victims of hurtful comments, exclusion, and even threats, all without leaving home. Cyberbullying can affect a child’s emotional health, leading to anxiety, depression, and a feeling of isolation. It is important to talk to your children about the impact of their words online and ensure they understand how to be kind and respectful in digital spaces.

Managing Online Time and Social Media Use

It is a parent’s responsibility to guide your children’s use of technology and social media. Here are some steps you can take to help keep them safe:

  • Set time limits for screen use each day. Too much time online can affect their sleep, homework, and relationships.
  • Supervise their social media accounts. Be aware of which platforms they’re using and whom they are connecting with.
  • Have open conversations about the risks of social media and the importance of online kindness and respect. Encourage your child to come to you if they experience anything upsetting online.
  • Use parental controls to restrict access to inappropriate content and limit the people your child can communicate with.

At EVPS we are committed to fostering an environment where our core values—caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and excellence—guide all aspects of student life, both online and offline. When it comes to social media and online interactions, our values are more important than ever.

Caring - look out for others, both in person and in the digital world, by standing up against cyberbullying and supporting those who may be struggling.

Honesty - be truthful about what you share online and have an open dialogue between child and parent to discuss online experiences.

Respect - be kind and considerate in your interactions, whether you’re speaking face-to-face or through a screen.

Responsibility involves understanding the risks of the digital world and using online platforms in a way that is safe and responsible.

Excellence -  make thoughtful decisions, strive for balance both online and offline, and use technology in ways that help everyone to grow and learn.

By working together, we can help our children enjoy the benefits of the online world while staying safe from its potential dangers and to embody our school values every time they log on.

Thank you for your support in keeping our kids safe online!
