In Knowledge we have finished our Novel Studies unit on Uncle Xbox and we are now beginning our Civics and Citizenship unit on Local Government. Students have identified the features of government and can explain the 3 levels of government that we have in Australia. We have looked at government on a local level and focused on how government was chosen during colonial times and compared to how local government is chosen in the modern day. Students looked at the communities they belong to on a deeper level.
In Writing students have finished their focus on factual recounts and begun identifying the writing skills needed to create a persuasive letter. Students have been exploring the use of modal verbs, hyperboles and emotive language to make their writing stronger and more convincing. Next week students will begin to co construct a persuasive letter.
In Numeracy, students dove into three exciting concepts: elapsed time, symmetry and number bonds! They are learning to calculate how much time has passed between events—an essential life skill for managing schedules and understanding time more effectively. Additionally, we have been exploring symmetry, including identifying lines of symmetry and understanding rotational symmetry in different shapes.
Students have expanded their understanding of the relationship between numbers by reviewing their understanding of number bonds and the bar model. Students have had the opportunity to add numbers together, and rearrange number sentences to find missing parts of equations.
In Grade 4 we have been learning all about empathy, which is the ability to understand and share how others feel. Through different activities from their Resilience Project journal, students have been encouraged to think about other people's experiences and emotions. This helps them build stronger friendships, solve problems peacefully, and create a kind and respectful environment. By practicing empathy, students learn to be more supportive of each other, making their school community a better place for everyone.
During Auslan this term we have reviewed the signs from last year as well as added new signs to our repertoire! Students have learnt how to sign what they ate for breakfast, how to order or purchase items in stores as well as strengthening our fluency with the Auslan alphabet.
