Literacy

In Phonics we have continued to learn some new Little Learners Love Literacy Program Chitter Chatter Chants, including the split digraphs i-e & e-e, i, ce, ci, cy, ge, gi, gy and e. We have learnt that we can use i (find a giant) in some words that have more than one syllable. We now also know that in the split digraphs i-e and e-e the dash means a consonant sits in the middle. We have read books with these graphemes, used them for spelling and have even used them to complete a crossword!

In writing, the students have been developing their sentence writing skills. They started by identifying and writing statements and questions, understanding how each one is structured and used in writing. Students then explored commands and exclamations, learning how commands give instructions and exclamations express strong emotions. Students demonstrated these skills in their own writing and sorting tasks.

Knowledge

In Knowledge, we have started a new unit and are looking at Greek myths. We know that Greek myths are fiction and are told to teach us something. We have looked at the main gods and goddesses in Greek myths and what their powers are. We are loving it so far and are excited to learn more. Throughout this unit we will look at the different myths and identify the characters, settings, problems and solutions within the story. We will also look into the behaviours of the characters and how they are positive or negative.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students have been consolidating their understanding of Place Value in numbers up to 1,000. Students have been able to use their knowledge of partitioning through place value to answer a range of addition and subtraction equations. In addition to number concepts, students have been learning how to measure items using informal units of measurement. Students have been using a range of tools to estimate, measure and order different lengths of items that can be found in the classroom. Furthermore, students have been consolidating their understanding of being able to describe and classify 2D and 3D shapes. To extend their learning, students have constructed a range of 3D shapes using nets. During our daily math reviews, we revise previously taught skills and concepts so students can continue to build on their knowledge and retain new content.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

In SEL, we have been exploring gratitude and mindfulness. Students have been identifying their personality strengths and recognising those of their peers, finding similarities and differences in how we are grateful for each other's contributions to our classroom.

Students have learned to use meditation and mindfulness strategies to help our minds and bodies respond to emotions wisely, such as using our senses to help calm down strong emotions.

Students have discussed different words they can use to show gratitude, such as ‘appreciate’ ‘enjoy’ and ‘thankful’. We have had deep conversations around the little treasures in our life that we are grateful for, like food, games, peace, family and friends.
