Wow! How quickly has Term 1 flown by? The Year One students are now confidently demonstrating the classroom expectations and routines of year one which is fantastic. Daily home reading is well established, and the students have just started completing a weekly Let’s Spell worksheet as part of their homework, which revises the learning that has occurred in the classroom the previous week. Here are some of the things the zesty year ones have been learning this month…
We have now started learning Stage 5 of the Little Learners Love Literacy Program. Students have been reading and writing words with four and five sounds which follow the following consonant-vowel patterns: CCVC (e.g. clap), CVCC (e.g. tent), CCVCC (e.g. plant).
In Writing, students have been learning about the difference between statement and question sentences and what end punctuation mark (.?) is needed for each type. The students have been given sentences to copy and then add the correct end punctuation.
We have started a new Knowledge unit about Animals and Habitats, and it has been a lot of fun. The students are enjoying learning new facts about different habitats such as the Arctic Tundra and Arctic Ocean and the animals that live there. Rattenborough, the adventurous rat, is a great guide and a big hit with the students! Did you know that walruses use their huge tusks as arms to pull themselves out of the water? There is also a very interesting animal that lives in the Arctic called a wolverine.
In Numeracy, students have continued to work on representing two-digit numbers using materials. Base ten blocks have now been introduced, and students are modelling two-digit numbers using a place value chart and recording how many tens and ones there are in the number. The topic of time and duration has also been introduced, and students have been sequencing familiar events in order of when they occur. During our daily math reviews, we revise previously taught skills and concepts so students can continue to build on their knowledge and retain new content.
During ‘The Resilience Project’ lessons, students have been learning about noticing their emotions and how our bodies give us clues to how we are feeling. Students have been learning that naming how they feel helps them to make thoughtful and helpful choices. Students have also learnt about the importance of having empathy and how showing kindness and helping others has many positive benefits for others as well as themselves. Students connected this lesson to our school value of Kindness.
We are proud of the continued progress our amazing year ones are showing and are looking forward to the rest of the term.
