Foundation March Newsletter 2025

Literacy

Foundation students have continued to build their letter and sound knowledge with our Little Learners Love Literacy program. So far we have learnt all of the Stage 1 Sounds (m, s, f, a, p, t, c, i) and are beginning to embark on Stage 2 (n, b, h, o). Students are participating in daily literacy activities where they practise reading, writing and identifying words that begin with these sounds.

In Writing we have begun to explore what a letter, word, picture and sentence looks like and sounding out 3 letter words (consonant-vowel-consonant). Students are involved in daily handwriting practise, where they review and practise the prewriting shapes to form the letters we have covered so far this term.

Students have continued to learn the Stage 1 (I, The, the, My and my) and Stage 2 (He, he, She, she, We, we, Was, was, To, to, Do and do) Heart words. These can be found in the Student Diaries for further practise at home.

Also part of our Literacy block students are engaged with the Story Champs program that supports building their confidence and comprehension skills. Through Story Champs, students are not only listening to stories but also actively participating by identifying key story elements such as characters, problems, feelings, actions, and endings and orally retelling them in their own words. This process not only enhances their storytelling abilities but also strengthens their grasp of narrative structure and fosters a deeper connection to the stories they encounter.

Knowledge

In Knowledge, students have finished the unit ‘All About Me’. Students explored learning about families of various shapes and sizes, how families looked from the past and how they have changed, and learning about the roles and responsibilities that families have to care for each other. Foundation students completed an ‘All about Me’ booklet where they drew pictures of their family members, ways they care for one another and what their house looks like.

Maths

Foundation students are developing a strong understanding of numbers from 1 to 10. We are focusing on the concepts of more and less, helping students build number sense and confidence when working with numbers. Students are learning to identify one more and one less than a given number. This skill supports their ability to count forwards and backwards, recognize number patterns, and make comparisons between quantities.

In addition to number concepts, we have continued to explore 2D shapes, learning to identify and describe their features. Students have also been developing their understanding of the duration of time, discussing concepts like short and long events and sequencing daily activities.

Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)

Students have been continuing to develop their social and emotional skills by participating in class discussions and activities surrounding building resilience. Foundation students have been discussing who they can go to for help, emotions they may feel throughout the day, problem solving when issues arise and ways in which we can communicate how we are feeling. This week, students will be learning about Harmony day, they will explore why we celebrate Harmony day and ways that we can show kindness to everyone.
