Hello 5 and 6 Families!
And that’s a wrap for Term 3! This term has been jam packed with the excursion to ACCA, Urban Camp, Athletics and Book Week. Our students have been working incredibly hard this term and should be proud of all the achievements they have made.
In Reading, we have continued to read texts linked to our Geography Unit and used this knowledge to undertake a rich task where students created their own ideal country. Students designed flags, created a map, explored the link between location and climate, the impact of population in urban and rural areas and strategies on how to limit pollution. In Writing, we examined the structure of exposition and procedural texts. Students wrote their own procedural text using language of description and designed their own breakfast in bed for Father’s Day. Using our class novels, students have learnt how to separate clauses using commas.
In Numeracy, we used full and semi-protractors to estimate, measure and compare angles to the closest degree. Students then used this knowledge to construct their own angles using a protractor. To finish off the term, we have explored the world of money! Students created a food budget for camp and researched the overall price of their selected menu items, as well as the lowest unit price, to find the best value for money. They then planned a weekend away where they researched and budgeted for transportation, accommodation, activities and food, for their immediate family. It was wonderful to see the ways students calculated discounts and worked out ways to stick to their budget.
In our Geography unit, students have examined the structure and features of maps, including latitude and longitude. We used a world map to identify and determine time differences due to different time zones across the world. To consolidate their knowledge and understanding of maps, legends and scale, students have participated in ‘Posties Big Race’. Using a map of the CBD, students needed to determine the shortest route through the city to deliver all their packages, including using the legend to have rest stops. They used a simple scale to calculate the distance travelled. Some students even calculated the time taken to complete the route via car, foot or bicycle.
Have a safe and happy holiday break, we look forward to welcoming all students back on Tuesday 3rd of October.
