Hello Year One Families,

We can’t believe we are at the end of Term 3! The students have worked extremely hard this term, learning lots of new things! We are very proud of what they have achieved.

Literacy

In the Phonics component of our Literacy block, we have completed 7.1 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program. The students have been working on their segmenting and blending skills with long vowel sounds and using two letter graphemes to record those sounds to spell words correctly, such as /oa/, as in goat eating toast. In Writing, the students have been working on writing informative texts and including features of informative texts in their own writing, such as subheadings and diagrams. They even wrote their own informative texts on natural environments, such as the great barrier reef or rainforests, because of all the learning they have been doing in our geography unit. This term, the students have also become increasingly confident in their phonemic awareness skills. Every day we have been practising important skills such as producing rhyming words, identifying initial, medial and final sounds in words, adding sounds to the beginning of a word part, substituting sounds to make new words, deleting sounds from the beginning of a word to make a new word and blending sounds and segmenting sounds.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have learnt how to share a group of objects equally. For example, if we had 6 lollies and we shared them equally with 2 people, how many lollies would each person get? The students were so proud of themselves when they were able to solve these problems and surprised when we told them that they were actually learning about division! We have also continued working on our place value knowledge. We have been identifying how many tens and ones in 2 and 3 digit numbers and the value that each digit represents. The students also learned about the features of 3D objects and using language such as faces, edges and vertices.

Geography

We have developed so much knowledge about our wonderful world in Geography this term. We learned about continents and oceans, Australia, states and cities and natural, managed and constructed features and environments in our beautiful country. The students have also explored maps and symbols and are going to create their own maps with symbols of Gilgai Plains Primary School.

We hope you have a restful and safe break. See you in Term 4!
