Holiday Maths

Creating positive memories of doing maths together as a family is an important step in building a confident, can-do attitude towards maths with your child. This is extremely valuable for our students because it shapes a positive mindset and attitude that enables and increases readiness for learning at school. Taking the time to explore mathematical ideas and concepts will encourage lateral thinking and problem solving.

Being happy and comfortable to make mistakes and try again can build a confident, can-do and resilient learner. These are key skills both in mathematics and in everyday life.

Some ideas that you may like to do over the holidays include:

Cooking and Baking

By doing activities like cooking and baking, you can develop your child's everyday maths skills. Children love to cook! It encourages their independence and increases awareness of healthy eating choices. Cooking can also be rich with mathematical language and thinking.

Using Chalk

You’ll be relieved to hear that maths games don’t have to be complicated, and all you’ll need for these particular ones is a piece of chalk and some space outside to master maths! Here are some ideas

Using chalk get the students to draw themselves on concrete and measure themselves using a tape. Eg. my leg is 50cm long

Get them to practice writing their numbers, times tables, algorithms and making patterns.

Make your own Learning Clock

This is a creative, hands-on way to discover the parts of a clock and how they work. You’ll be having fun whilst learning the hours and minutes on a clock and practising telling the time.
