Greatness in Little Things

Our world today is obsessed with “greatness”. We celebrate what we perceive to be great things. If you want to make news headlines, you are often encouraged to accomplish what the world considers to be “out of this world”. So, scientists, technical geeks, billionaires, movie stars, musicians and the like often get the attention of the media for this "greatness".

But interestingly, Jesus often found greatness in little things.  In the Parable of the Faithful servant, he has a master commending a servant who had accomplished his task regardless of how insignificant that may have looked through worldly eyes. The master said: “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over little; I will set you over much.” (Matthew 25:23) In Luke 16:10 Jesus also commends those who are faithful in little things. He says, “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones.”

In the Parable of Judgment (Matthew 25), it is those who spent their time and resources feeding the hungry, giving a drink to the thirsty, sheltering the stranger, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, that are commended.

It is in this spirit that I congratulate all Year 7 to 9s who sacrificed to sleep on the rooftop as a way of empathising with the poor and homeless. To such, Jesus would say in his earthly ministry: “Truly, I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Sometimes greatness is in doing little things.

I wish the whole School Community a restful and relaxing September School Holidays.
