This Week’s Reads

It’s another week and more great books to be read in the library!

Kendall did a great job illustrating words from last week's story.

Kindergarten - are continuing to learn about fiction and non-fiction and are reading one of my favourite books, 'Koala Lou' by Mem Fox, and then spotting the differences to ‘Koala” by Dee Phillips.

Stage 1 - is building on their knowledge of narratives and learning to retell the story by illustrating the beginning, middle, and end of ‘Farmhouse’ by Sophie Blackall. They’re particularly enjoying drawing what they would have in their own house too.

Stage 2 - will be exploring the adventure genre this week by reading the first chapter of The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling and spotting features of adventure in the movie trailer. Did you know that this famous and beloved story is nearly 130 years old?

Stage 3 - before students complete their book trailer on iMovie, we’re reading the beginning of one of the most beautiful stories in the library, ‘Penguin Bloom’ by Cameron Bloom and Bradley Trevor Grieve. Many of you may know about this heartwarming story how a little magpie (Penguin) is saved by a family and it saves their lives. Now students can borrow the book that includes all the photos of this remarkable family.

Dr. Cameron Stelzer Visit

Last week, we had a great visit with author, Dr Cameron Stelzer. Dr Cameron held writing and illustrating workshops with Years 3 to 6 and the feedback was that it was fantastic! Dr Cameron spoke of his inspiration for writing and then students were led through illustrating a character from one of his many books.

Not only did Dr Cameron work with Primary students, he also spent some time with the 9/10 Visual Arts class. Apart from being an author, Dr Cameron has a Doctorate in Visual Arts and he enjoyed working with our students in secondary which is something different for him. After sharing where his Visual Arts degree has taken him, he then encouraged students to create and illustrate a new character by combining three animals. The results were great and students enjoyed the experience too.

Term 4 Scholastic Book Club

Today, the final Scholastic Book Club catalogue will go home for the year. It’s full of great ideas for Christmas, especially the discounted book packs. Book Club will close next Wednesday,  25th October 2023 at 9 a.m., so please ensure online orders are entered by this time. As with all Book Club catalogues, this is an optional program and there is no pressure to buy at all.

When you order online, there is an option to select that it’s a gift. We’re notified of this when they’re delivered and can hold these for collection later so your child does not know something’s been ordered.

Issue 7 catalogue is also available to be viewed online here and includes links to LOOP online ordering.

HTS 60th Anniversary Photos

Over the weekend, the library hosted a display of photos of Holy Trinity School over the last 60 years. After enjoying looking at them, I decided that it would be a fun idea to leave them out for students to view them too. Students of all ages loved finding (and laughing!) at their parents, siblings, and other family members. They also had a giggle at some of us teachers too.

Meet the Readers

Meet one of our newest readers, Estabel in 3G. Estabel started last week and was straight in to borrow some new books. Welcome to HTS!

Sienna read the Younger Readers Book of the Year, ‘Runt’ by Craig Silvey over the holidays and she gave it a thumbs up and a 4-star rating.

Happy reading,

Mrs. Toni Fraser
