Art

This term in Visual Arts, we have been exploring creativity, technique, and art history through a variety of creative projects across all year levels.

In Prep, we discovered the magic of colour by experimenting with primary colours and mixing them to create secondary colours. We painted green leaves, orange stars, and our very own purple "Purple People Eaters”. As a class, we decided on how we would present our work. Now their colourful creations brighten the Art Room as part of a fantastic Prep mural.

Grade 1/2s, explored sculpture by learning to make pinch pots from clay and joining pieces to create imaginative “Pinch Pot Monsters.” After sculpting, they enjoyed painting their creatures and inventing fun stories and personalities for each one.

Our Grade 3/4s further explored sculpture, focusing on the elements of form3D shape, and space. We first worked with clay and then moved onto kinetic sculptures inspired by Alexander Calder, experimenting with balance, movement, and design.

Meanwhile, in Grade 4/5 and 5/6, we delved into the world of Vincent Van Gogh. We studied his life and how it influenced his art, focusing on Starry Night as a prompt. We analysed how Van Gogh created a sense of movement in this iconic painting, when and why it was painted, and then planned and sketched our own artworks inspired by it. After refining our ideas through thumbnail sketches, we selected our preferred mediums to bring our dynamic designs to life.

On Monday, 15th September, we celebrated International Dot Day, a special occasion honoring creativity, courage, and collaboration. This day marks the publication of the beloved book The Dot, which inspires people to make their mark and embrace their imagination. As a whole school, we came together to create a giant mural, starting with a simple dot and seeing where it could take us. The colorful rainbow dots look fantastic, and the children loved spotting their own creations while celebrating each other’s creativity.

It has been an inspiring term filled with hands-on learning, artistic exploration, and discovery. We look forward to seeing even more creativity in term 4!
