Planning starts in June/July the previous year applying for rights, organising staffing, liaising with venues, planning the rehearsal schedule, organising scripts and song books, booking auditions, and creating advertising. Not to mention assigning cast roles after auditions and then getting geared up for the rehearsal period the following year.
Right from the get-go, with staff, students and parents, there was a buzz of nostalgia around the beautiful memory of watching, or reading, the fabled Mary Poppins story.
-It's about the childhood wonder of imagination.
-It's about being creative and playful whilst living in a rigid and punctilious world created by the assembly-line mechanisms of an adult-driven society.
-It's about adults letting go of their unrealistic social restraints, remembering the innocent glee of their investigatory child self, enabling them to re-engage with the wondrous and diverse world around them.
-It's about re-connecting and cherishing those you love whilst doing all the above, in unity.
When I reflect on the cast, the crew, the orchestra, the marketing team, the production team, I am blown away by their gracious generosity and talent. This spectacular musical could truly not happen without all of them and it's the unity of individuals with God-given talents that really shines through as an enduring theme across the entire process from start to finish.
Phillipians 2:2 - Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
This unity is evident in the way our cast interact with each other - the encouraging words shared for individual cast members after every rehearsal, the heartfelt prayers for each other, the sharpening given via constructive criticism, the quiet assistance to regulate anxiety and nerves side-stage, the reassurance given when lines are missed or vocal lines dropped - the warm feeling of belonging to the same "tribe".
Post-show, I love seeing the chimney-sweep hat tips to each other as they pass in the school yard, or hearing "G'day Gov'ner" along with a cheeky smile. Despite the significant trough of the end-of-show blues, after the high of production week, there is a sense of long-lasting unity embedded in belonging; and all of these are the markers of a life-altering, unified event.
All those involved will always belong in the BHCS production tribe; an event frozen in time and held in the collective memory and wonder of such a momentous experience.
Finally, we thank our audience members - parents, students, staff, community members, and families who supported our students and our teams. Our production tribe is proud of their performances and so gratefully honour your support."
