Assistant Principal (Years 11/12) Report

Report from Assistant Principal Year 11/12

Term 3 Progress Reports

Progress reports will be available for viewing in Compass from Wednesday, 18th September. These reports provide an overview of your child’s learning behaviors across all subjects. Parents are encouraged to review this information with their child, acknowledging areas of success as well as identifying areas requiring further development. Engaging in this process supports students in reflecting on their academic progress throughout Term 3 and in refining their goals for the upcoming term. A parent guide outlining the steps to access reports via Compass is attached

Unit 3/4 Trial Exams

During the upcoming school holidays, our Unit 3/4 students – the majority of whom are in Year 12 – will be undertaking their Trial Examinations. These begin on Monday, 22nd September 2025 with the English and EAL examinations, and continue through until Thursday, 25th September.

The Trial Examinations are an important measure of each student’s readiness for the VCE Examinations. They not only highlight what students know and can apply but, more importantly, identify areas where further improvement is required. As examinations are the most significant factor in determining final study scores, it is essential that students approach these assessments with their full commitment. Missing a Trial Examination is likely to place a student at a disadvantage in their preparation; therefore, attendance is compulsory for all Unit 3/4 students.

We extend our sincere thanks to Ms Kristina Vasilakis for coordinating the Trial Examinations and to the Year 12 teachers who are generously giving their time during the holidays to supervise.

The VCE Written Examination period will commence on Tuesday, 28th October with the English Examination. This is a pivotal time for students, and the ongoing support of parents and carers is greatly valued.

External Exam Revision

To support and assist our VCE students sitting VCAA exams there are several external revision seminars, which can support exam preparation. Some of these programs are free of charge and others charge a fee. The links below will take students to some of the more popular VCE examination seminars.

             Summer Uniform

Term 4 also marks the changeover to summer uniform. Students and families are reminded that all students should be in full summer uniform on the first day of Term 4. This means, the summer dress for girls, and no tights or stockings. If you are unsure on what to wear, please check summer uniform requirements on our website https://www.westallsc.vic.edu.au/uniform

Students participating in PE and sports classes are expected to wear a school cap when outside.

Subject Selections

- Thank You Families

As of last week, all students entering Years 11 and 12 in 2026 were required to submit their Subject Selections. This process is both detailed and significant, involving the consideration of extensive information and many valuable conversations. It is an exciting stage of the school year, as students begin making meaningful decisions about their educational pathways, while parents seek to ensure their child selects options that will support them in achieving their personal best.

At Westall Secondary College, we view the opportunity to guide and support students and families through this process as a privilege. We sincerely thank parents and students for their thoughtful engagement and look forward with anticipation to the year ahead.

Professional Learning Community (PLC) Update

Throughout Term 3, WSC teachers have been actively engaged in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), with a focus on enhancing and refining classroom practice. While we are fortunate to have a teaching staff of such high caliber, we remain committed to the principle of continuous improvement. Accordingly, our teachers regularly participate in professional learning activities and reflective dialogue designed to strengthen their skills and strategies, ensuring that students are consistently supported to achieve their personal best.

The current seven-week PLC cycle has centered on the embedding of positive classroom management strategies into teaching practice. This work is guided by the Department of Education’s PLC model and is closely aligned with our own Learning the Westall Way framework, which informs how teachers approach both learning and wellbeing in the classroom.

Within this structure, teachers have drawn upon their own classroom observations, professional experiences, and cohort data from the 2025 Attitudes to School Survey to identify specific areas for improvement and to set collective goals. Each PLC group, led by a school leader and consisting of approximately 4–6 teachers, has engaged in targeted professional learning and collaborative classroom observations. This process not only supports individual growth but also fosters a culture of shared responsibility for the continuous advancement of teaching practice across the College.
