Here is what's happening in Sports!

Westall is the most consistent school producing the best badminton players.

The year 7 girls’ badminton team delivered a strong performance at the Southern Region Finals, showing skill, teamwork, and determination from start to finish.  They followed the year 8s who came second in their championships. The day began with Group A matches, where Westall executed their game plan with precision.

Amogna dominated from the rear court, unleashing her signature jump smashes that forced opponents into defensive lifts.

Maahi worked patiently at the net, placing the shuttle delicately into tight corners, forcing errors and creating openings for her partner.

Ghina, the team’s vocal and strategic leader, combined steady defence with sharp mid-court interceptions, often turning rallies around with clever pushes and disguised drops.

Kathryn used her court awareness to perfection — spotting gaps in her opponents’ formations and driving the shuttle into space before following up with powerful downward smashes.

Kim, taking on each team’s top-ranked player, played with a cool head, mixing attacking clears with net kills to keep rallies under her control. Suri started as our number 3 player and was very dynamic with her push shots.  She and Kim made a great partnership.

In the semi-final, Westall’s doubles combinations thrived, with quick rotation play and well-timed cross-court drives breaking down their opponents’ formations. Their shot variety, from tight spinning net shots to deep clears, kept rivals guessing and under constant pressure.

The final against Keysborough College was a hard-fought contest. Long rallies tested both teams’ endurance, with sharp smashes being countered by brilliant defensive lifts. Westall had their chances, particularly in the doubles, where they pushed Keysborough to deuce in the deciding game. Despite a narrow loss, the girls walked off court with pride, knowing they had given their all.

While there was some disappointment, the team’s post-match reflections were full of positivity. They acknowledged how, match by match, they became stronger, smarter, and more connected as a team. It was a day that showcased not just Westall’s badminton talent, but also their growth in tactics, mental toughness, and team spirit.

iCreate Elite Training

On the 3rd of September, Olympic bronze medallist Caitlin Parker visited iCreate Elite Training students as part of the VIS Be Fit, Be Well program. Caitlin shared her inspiring story of growing up to become an Olympic level boxer, providing insight into the training, diet and recovery habits which have led to her success.

The highlight of the visit was getting the opportunity to see and hold her Olympic bronze medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics. We thank Caitlin for her time and will look to implement what we learned into our training workouts for the rest of the year.

Westall Secondary Athletics Team at Kingston Athletics Carnival - Ateca leads the way

On the 11th of September, the Westall Secondary Athletics Team proudly represented our school at the Kingston Athletics Carnival, held at Duncan McKinnon Reserve. Our students competed with determination and spirit, providing strong opposition in both the track and field events.

Despite being the smallest school in the district, Westall stood out for its incredible participation. In fact, we had the largest number of competitors on the day, a point noted by the carnival coordinator, who was very impressed by our school’s commitment and enthusiasm. Positioned between McKinnon and Bentleigh on the day, our team showed that size does not limit heart or effort.

Many students performed strongly and earned ribbons across a range of events. The standout performance came from Ateca in Year 12, who achieved an exceptional victory in the 18–20 Girls’ High Jump. Her outstanding effort not only brought great pride to Westall but also secured her place in the regional finals later this year—the only student from our school to qualify.

Overall, it was a day filled with energy, teamwork, and school pride, and we congratulate all students for their effort and sportsmanship.
