Shared Futures: Communities that Listen to Children

Last week, Jag and Lily represented Buninyong PS at Shared Futures: Communities that Listen to Children in Melbourne, hosted by the Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) and supported by VicHealth.

Through their involvement in the City of Ballarat’s Kids’ Think Tank program, they were invited to join a panel of young people and speak in front of a big audience from across the state – including Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, Meena Singh. Jag and Lily shared their thoughts on children’s rights, what it means to have a voice, and how adults can truly listen to young people. They did an amazing job and made us all very proud!

One of the fun questions they were asked was “Where’s Buninyong?” – so they had the chance to tell people about our school and community. As well as meeting and chatting to the Commissioner, they also met Dr Robyn Mansfield, who was excited to introduce herself because she once attended Buninyong PS as a Grade 6 student back in 1983!  Robyn is now a Research Fellow at Monash University, where she works on projects, local and international, that help communities – especially children – have a say in rebuilding and planning after disasters. It was wonderful for Jag and Lily to connect with a former Buninyong student who is making such a difference in the world.

Guess the Jelly Beans Winner!

Thank you to everyone who supported our Guess the Jelly Beans in the Jar competition.

Together we raised funds for the Type 1 Foundation, which provides support, awareness and connection for those living with type 1 diabetes.

A big congratulations to Albus from Scotsburn, who was the closest guesser! Albus guessed 456 jelly beans, with the actual number being 452 – only four off!

This fun fundraiser was organised by Mia in Grade 6 (with help from her mum Cassie). As someone living with type 1 diabetes, Mia wanted to help raise awareness and support others in the community.

Well done, Albus, and thank you to everyone who joined in to support such an important cause.
