Grade 6

Reading

In Reading, we have begun exploring House by Dan Giovannoni and Charlie Lane. This thought-provoking book tells the story of a group of teenagers who stumble upon an abandoned house that seems to hold more than just old furniture—it’s filled with secrets, stories, and unexpected encounters. As students read, they are engaging with themes of friendship, identity, and discovery, while unpacking the deeper meanings layered within the text.

House is also a fantastic lead-in to our Narrative Novel Study unit beginning in Term 4. Students have enjoyed discussing the characters and their motivations, as well as analysing how the authors use structure and language to build mood and tension throughout the story.

Writing

In Writing, students are laying the groundwork for their narrative writing unit in Term 4. We’ve been delving into key storytelling techniques such as "show, don’t tell," sensory language, personification, similes and metaphors, and narrative planning. These tools are helping students craft vivid and emotionally engaging stories of their own.

It’s been wonderful to see students experiment with figurative language and descriptive writing, building confidence in their ability to bring characters and settings to life on the page. We look forward to seeing how students apply these skills as they begin writing their own narratives next term.

Mathematics

In Maths, we have been exploring location and Cartesian planes. Students have been learning how to plot points, move them using translations, and describe these movements using mathematical language. This has helped them strengthen their spatial awareness and problem-solving skills, as well as apply their knowledge to real-world contexts.

Integrated

Our Integrated unit has focused on debating and persuasive communication. Students have been working in parties to develop bills they believe should be passed. They have written persuasive responses outlining the reasons their party’s bill should be supported and have been practising presenting their ideas in front of their peers. This has encouraged teamwork, critical thinking, and confident public speaking.

Book Week (Day)

A parade full of colourful and creative costumes along with cheerful smiles - Our celebration of book week brought excitement to our school. Students had the opportunity to dress up as a book character and enjoyed sharing with their peers all about their favourite characters and books.
