Grade 2

Literacy:

In spelling, we have been learning about using ge or dge at the end of words to spell the sound /j/. It was so interesting to learn that we never spell words with the letter j at the end. We have just completed our cumulative review where we assessed students' knowledge of all of the spelling rules we have learnt in term 3. All of the grade 2 teachers are so proud of their students results!

In Comprehension and Fluency, we have been learning how to find the main idea and summarise. We have learnt that we need to think about who, when, where, what and how in a story and write about it in our own words. This has been a tricky skill for us to learn! Ask your students to summarise the next book you read together.

Our new mentor text for story book is The Day The Crayons Came Home. It has been so exciting to read the post cards from the different coloured crayons and learn about the different places they are writing from.

In Gammar, we have been learning about conjunctions. We now know that conjunctions are joining words that we can use to connect two sentences to make one longer sentence. We have learnt the conjunctions ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘or’.

Numeracy:

Last week we completed our Shape unit and had lots of fun using hands on materials to explore the elements of shape. We have now begun learning about patterns. We have learnt about increasing and decreasing number patterns. Our mathematicians have learnt how to continue and create patterns that increase or decrease by ten or one hundred. We are excited to learn about time in term four.

Writing:

Our wonderful writers are learning all about persuasive writing. They have learnt that to write a persuasive text, they need an opinion, three reasons with examples and a conclusion. We have learnt two persuasive techniques to use in our writing - rhetorical questions and alliterations. Don’t you know that our grade two’s are awesome, amazing, adventurous writers?

Myuna Farm:

We had the BEST time at Myuna Farm last week! We explored lots of different farm animals and even got to feed them! We got to go on a train ride through the farm. We had lots of fun and we were so proud of how well our students represented our school.

Thank you, Grade 2 families for your continued support over the year. We hope you have a great holidays and we are looking forward to finishing off a wonderful year in term 4.
