Pathways School Updates

Sheronica Snowy (Year 12 at Firbank)
Sherry has a strong interest in photography and recently got behind the scenes at the Melbourne International Film Festival showing of the film “Journey Home.” (with big thanks to Keryn Nossal at Fancy Films for the opportunity).
In Sherry’s words:
"I recently went and saw the David Gulpillil film - The Journey Home, and I think all Australians should watch it. The film tells the story of how Aboriginal Australians can strongly become as one.
For non-Indigenous Australians, the film shows so many of our cultural strengths and adaptability and the extent of support we give each other. It showed how hard it is for Aboriginal people, like Gulpilil to live culturally strong lives but also live in the white world. This is good for all Australians to try and understand. It is a positive depiction of Aboriginal people being strong and supportive and spiritual and having fun and living full and adventurous lives.
After I saw the film I felt really emotional. I was feeling like there are thousands of people who struggle being away from home a lot and want to go back when it is time.
After the film Witiyana Marika, a son of David Gulpilil and founding member of Yothu Yindi, spoke to me. He told me the ancestors are looking after me and that I am in the right place. I felt like he was right. It was sad but also reassuring."
Peggy Martin (Year 12 at Firbank) - work experience at A. G. Coombs
Peggy has recently completed four Wednesdays of work experience in refrigeration/air conditioning, with huge thanks to A. G. Coombs Consulting for making this possible. Peggy has been attending a Collins Street site and has had terrific feedback … “Peggy is one of the best work experience students we have ever had – she was not on her phone the whole time and was interested and asked good questions." A. G. Coombs are a major MITS supporter.
Year 12s Strengths and Wellbeing session
In August the Year 12’s gathered at MITS for afternoon tea and a wellbeing and strengths hour. Everyone enjoyed seeing their Year 7 graduation video and then talking about their own and each other’s strengths and making plans for 2026.
Kingswood girls visiting Monash University and Box Hill Institute
In September Lesharnie, Ciara, Nickiesha (Year 12) and Jamelia (Year 10) have been busy thinking about future career choices.
All four girls participated in a Nursing boot camp at Box Hill Institute and also had a look around the Monash campuses at Clayton and Frankston. We focused on the Nursing and Medicine areas, and saw the terrific facilities, including life-like dummies and real-life simulation laboratories. We also learned about the terrific support for Indigenous students and were able to see some of the impressive accommodation available.
See main image, we also ran into Brady Cooper who used to work with the students at MITS!
