Secondary 11/12
Term 4
11A
This term, students in 11A had the opportunity to further develop their Work-Related Skills at Brunswick Industries. B.I are a manufacturing social enterprise specialising in liquid filling and packaging. This was a work experience opportunity in an industrial setting that employs people with disabilities. Students learnt essential transferable skills such as communication, teamwork and time keeping.
11B
This term has been productive for Secondary 11B. The students particularly enjoyed volunteering at the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on Thursdays, where they embraced various roles to effectively manage the program. They demonstrated significant effort in fulfilling their Work-Related Skills requirements. Additionally, they collaborated as a class to create a "Minute to Win It" activity, during which they sourced materials and developed task cards for their selected game, engaging the Year 11 cohort in a fun experience.
The students also appreciated their community involvement during visits to Watsonia Neighbourhood House and Open House in Macleod, where they learned about the diverse activities and programs available to students beyond the school environment.
11C
By the end of Year 11 the accumulated learning through primary, middle and high school starts to shine through in moments of independence, respect and responsibility. Seeing members of the class support each other, or just to be able to apologise after realising they hurt someone’s feelings is rewarding. For others, to be able to sit and write a draft for a school captain election speech independently, or saying, “I’m heading home on public transport tomorrow,” or “I’m proud of getting my L’s” are all eye-opening events when one reflects how far these students have come.
In Secondary 11C, the focus for Term 4 Personal Development Skills was Community Participation and Exploring and Connecting with Community. We’ve travelled to Watsonia Neighbourhood House and Open House on excursions. The class planned a whole section community Staff Vs Students Basketball Event. 11C had a great time at the event and weren’t too fazed when the teachers won all their games. The class also researched and planned a Minute To Win It activity to participate in a Year 11 Minute To Win It day.
During Numeracy lessons 11C have focused on Financial Numeracy through the Earn and Learn program and a Travel Project, where everyone planned their own holiday. All were excited to explore travelling. Some students might even take that holiday one day.
Literacy activities have focussed on the Earn and Learn program and Informed discussions regarding various topics, from school captain speeches to whether Mike Tyson tried his hardest in his recent boxing match.
Work-Related Skills in Term 4, 11C participated in the Essendon Program. They experienced the gardening program activities such as using gardening tools safely, watering, weeding, pruning, seasonal planting, sweeping, repotting and hedge cutting.
It has been a wonderful thing to see skills and attributes of 11C coming together in Term 4.
11D
Term 4 in 11D has been incredibly busy, with the highlight being our ‘Industry Exploration’ unit. Students had the opportunity to visit a variety of workplaces, observing their operations and considering whether these industries might interest them in the future. We also enjoyed exploring the city, navigating the bustling streets using public transport, and discovering all that the city has to offer.
Several students participated in the Real Industry Job Interviews (RIJI), where they crafted resumes and cover letters before interviewing with actual employers. This experience provided them with valuable feedback on their interview techniques. Additionally, many students took part in work placements at the school café, gaining hands-on experience.
As the year comes to a close, the pace has remained high with end-of-year markets, celebrations, and the creation of lasting memories.
Year 12
This term has been incredibly busy for the Year 12 students with the Graduation, Year 12 camp, completing their work programs and life after school.
For our Personal Development Skills unit, we have been learning about what it means to give back to the community and the value of volunteering. We have visited charities including 3081 Angels and Imagine Re-Evolution, and participated in guest speaker sessions to deepen our understanding of what these organisations do to help those in need.
As a Year 12 cohort, we also collected and sorted a range of donated items into packs for children and families, and donated them to 3081 Angels.
