Cultural Immersion

This week Mrs Bearman and myself attended the Spirit on country at the TREC. We started the event at Myall creek.

Dances and speeches on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture were shared and students throughout our diocese read the plaques in both English and Gamilaraay.

The day provided deep connection and understanding for the events that happened there.

The following two days were held at the TREC. Kamilaroi Elder, Len Waters gave an inspiring Welcome to Country. Keynote speakers were Nathan Towney and Greg Inglis. Students performed dances.

We had the opportunity to attend five breakout sessions, some of these gave insight into language, mental health and various programs that are run for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students.

We had a special Gala dinner and Sean Choolburra gave a brilliant comedic act. Terra Firma provided us with some beautiful country rock music. All the schools artworks were on display.

To finish off the conference we had a closing ceremony that tied together everything we learned and experienced over our time there.

A big thank you to both Karen Tighe and Judith Wark for all their hardwork. The conference was unforgettable.
