Learning News 4/5/6

Mrs Amy Phillips

Welcome to Term 4!

It’s shaping up to be another busy but enjoyable term! We’ve started the term with new topics in most key learning areas.

Writing

In writing, we’re focusing on poetry—a timely unit, as students will soon choose their favorite poem style to enter the Barraba Memorial Clock Centenary Poem Competition.

We began by exploring Haiku, a form that follows a 5-7-5 syllable pattern. All students worked hard to write a nature-themed Haiku and incorporated a metaphor into their poem.

The sun is a torch                                                 The sky looks peaceful

Lighting the world beneath                               The birds are happy today

Showing it's power                                               Spring time is magic

Science

In Science this term, we are learning about digital technology. Students will investigate the main internal components of common digital systems, understand their functions, and explore how these systems form networks to transmit data. They’ll also analyze an app to examine how it uses elements and principles of design, determining its purpose and the requirements it addresses. By the end of the term, students will design their own app to meet a specific need or purpose.

While Mrs. Russell was with the class, students had the chance to explore Scratch, an online coding platform that promotes computational thinking, problem-solving and creativity. Although the students found it challenging at first, they enjoyed the experience and were eager to learn more. We plan to continue experimenting with Scratch and building our coding skills throughout the term.

Creative Arts

This term in Creative Arts, we are focusing on music. The students are currently learning some fundamental elements of music, including beat, rhythm, and pitch. These core concepts will serve as the foundation for their musical development throughout the term. We will choose an instrument to learn, and we plan to perform a musical piece at Presentation Day.

Save the Date:

Our Year 6 Graduation Mass and Dinner has been scheduled for Thursday, Week 9, on the 12th of December. Beginning at 5:30 pm.

Stage 3 Maths

We have started the term with a unit that explores the properties of 2D shapes, particularly triangles and quadrilaterals. We have learned about the classification of polygons, measured and compared angles, discussed parallel sides and have been able to group according to regular and irregular shapes. Students were challenged to put shapes into two groups using a property rule and we had to guess what they used; this led to great discussion around the numbers of angles, numbers of sides, parallel sides and types of angles.

Next week we return to the study of multiplicative relations where students will consolidate their understanding around the relationship of division and multiplication.
