Writing
CURRICULUM FOCUS
We are learning how to use different punctuation marks and use them correctly in our writing.
VOCABULARY
Punctuation: symbols that you add to writing to separate phrases and sentences.
Full Stop (.) used in writing at the end of a sentence.
Question Mark (?) used in writing at the end of a sentence to show that it is a question.
Exclamation Mark (!) used for something you say or shout suddenly because of surprise, fear, or pleasure.
Comma (,) used in writing to separate parts of a sentence showing a slight pause, or to separate the single things in a list.
Quotation Marks (“) put around a word or phrase to show that someone has written or said it.
ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING
Tell a story together but leave out the punctuation. For example, say, "I love pizza" without an ending punctuation.
Ask your child what punctuation could fit the sentence— a period, question mark, or exclamation point— and how it changes the meaning.
Then, create a story together, practising where punctuation is needed.
