Maths Innovation
Year 2
In Year 2 Maths Innovation, students will continue to explore problem solving, with a particular focus on workshopping ideas through collaboration, cooperation and building shared understandings. They will utilise a range of concrete, written and mental strategies to solve practical problems according to set criteria. Learners will be presented with opportunities to practise solving equations using all four operations in different contexts, including worded problems. They will further develop their proficiency using Australian currency by creating shopping lists with budget constraints and find the required amounts of change after a purchase. Students will be encouraged to consistently record their thinking in workbooks for all learning tasks.
Year 3
In Year 3 Maths Innovation, students will continue to work towards their goal as they implement the Innovator’s Mindset characteristics: Courageous, Determined, Reflective, Collaborative and Visionary. They will further develop their ability to visualise the situation when reading a worded problem and by looking at a diagram to deepen their Reasoning and enhance their solutions. Additionally, students will explore prime numbers and discover prime factors of composite numbers. They will focus on developing their Problem Solving and Reasoning skills to investigate open-ended problems. Students will also explore the order of solving the four operations and practice solving these problems with fractions.
Year 4
Year 4 Maths Innovators will continue to work towards their goal as they implement the Innovator’s Mindset characteristics: Courageous, Determined, Reflective, Collaborative and Visionary. They will discuss and develop new strategies to support skills to solve worded problems. Additionally, students will investigate factors and multiples as they investigate and develop divisibility rules for numbers up to ten. They will also explore the features and angles within shapes to discover the criteria for creating a tessellation and consider how these patterns are used in different cultures.
Year 5
As students embark on their learning in Maths Innovation, they will continue to work towards their goal as they implement the Innovator’s Mindset characteristics: Courageous, Determined, Reflective, Collaborative and Visionary. As they learn about the Binary Number System, they will explore the connections to real-world applications and its use by digital technology. Additionally, students will explore open-ended Fermi problems, to investigate the natural world around them and the contribution they can make to benefit the environment. Students will also learn about the Order of Operations and practice how to solve these complex expressions accurately.
Year 6
In Year 6 Maths Innovation, students will continue to work towards their goal as they implement the Innovator’s Mindset characteristics: Courageous, Determined, Reflective, Collaborative and Visionary. As students near the end of the Primary School experience, they will be delving into the connection that mathematics has to computer programming by coding to explore mathematical questions. Additionally, they will investigate connections to the Hexadecimal Number System and discover how this is used in technology. Students will also have the opportunity to explore the properties of triangles and consider how these are used in everyday life.
