Virtual Design

Year 6

In Year 6 Virtual Design, students will learn what makes up a brand's identity and what companies must consider when changing their ‘brand image’ to reach a new customer base. Having learnt this theory, students will then embark on an investigation as to the techniques used in different advertisements. This will eventually culminate in the learners organising the rebrand of a fictional company, considering all aspects of a brand, such as the logo, the colour palette, the imagery and, of course, the products themselves. The second half of the term will surely be a much awaited feature for many students, for it offers the opportunity for students to learn more about the world of fashion, the principles required by that field and the practical ways one can employ those principles in their own outfits. This theory will be accompanied by a practical task, wherein learners will act as style consultants for potential clients, with the final designs to be completed in the world of virtual reality.

Year 5

Students are in for a unique and in-depth experience for Year 5 Virtual Design. They will commence their learning with an exploration into the discipline of fashion design – examining the principles and techniques designers use to enhance the visual appeal and quality of an outfit on the street and runway. This will feed into a practical task in which students will create a series of outfits for the Met Gala based around the theme of ‘The Asian Century’. The second half of the term will look at interior design, both in terms of the individual pieces of furniture that make up a room, as well as the overall aesthetic layout of the room itself. The 20th and 21st philosophies of the Art Nouveau movement, Modernism, American Art Deco style and the Bauhaus school will be examined as both design philosophies with their own quirks and features and as zeitgeists of the cultural themes of the eras in which they were dominant. This will culminate with students creating their own furniture and architectural designs for a potential client.

Year 4

Year 4 Virtual Design offers a double header of learning and exploration for its students. To start the term off, they will not only investigate the design features common in all cars - ranging from headlights to exhausts but will also learn about the unique design philosophies of some of the major automotive nations. Then, they must choose or combine the uncompromising technological perfection of the Germans, the pure speed of the Italians or the lightness and reliability Japanese engineering strives for into their own brand of cars, which will be designed within the 3D space of Virtual Reality. The second half of the term will be an exploration into character design and how they can use colour, facial expressions and body language to tell a story via a still image. This theory will then be put into practice, with students being asked to design a theoretical ‘school mascot’ for Glen Waverley Primary School.
