ICCES Summer Tour Recap
On Friday 11 October, 88 students represented Girton in the inaugural ICCES Summer Tour in Ballarat, showcasing their talents across various sports.
Volleyball victories
- Junior Girls: The team demonstrated remarkable resilience, finishing second in their group before being narrowly defeated by Braemar. A fantastic effort overall!
- Intermediate Boys: The team was excited and enthusiastic about joining a new competition and facing new opposition. They were switched on right from the first point of their first game, which built their confidence, making them comfortably beat GVGS. The second game was tighter, as a team of footballers and basketballers from Braemar College put Girton off their game with some unorthodox style. Braemar won the first set but it was great to see the Girton boys, led by Head Coach Ryan Pham (11 Aherne), communicate with each other, problem-solve and figure out how to exploit Braemar’s weaknesses. They did that with great success and ran away with the second set and the game. They faced Braemar again in the final and by that stage of the competition the Girton boys were a finely honed machine, working incredibly well together. Braemar’s athleticism and enthusiasm was undeniable, so Girton had to play hard and smart to win the competition.
- Intermediate Girls: The girls displayed clinical precision, going undefeated in the group stages. They triumphed over Braemar in the semi-finals and overcame Bacchus Marsh Grammar in the final, securing another title for Girton. An impressive feat, finishing equal first in overall points!
Golf achievements
Despite the cold, wet and windy conditions, our golfers persevered on an unfamiliar course. Notable performances included:
- Archie Lee (10 Frew): 31 points
- Liam Dole (10 Frew): 35 points
- Ollie O’Toole (9 Riley): 19 points
- Ryder Comer (9 Jones): 29 points
The team finished third overall, showcasing their determination.
Tennis triumphs
- Junior and Intermediate Boys: Both teams fought hard, with the Junior Boys finishing fourth and Intermediate Boys third overall.
- Junior and Intermediate Girls: Unstoppable throughout the group stages, both teams clinched first place, leading Girton to be crowned overall winners in tennis. Outstanding performances all around!
Cricket highlights
- Junior Boys: Full of energy, they entertained and showed potential despite not winning.
- Junior Girls: With most players new to the sport, they excelled, highlighted by impressive batting from Rehmi Burke (9 Jones) and Elliyah Daneen (9 Riley).
- Intermediate Boys: They had a strong tournament, winning three out of four matches, narrowly losing to the eventual champions and finishing third overall.
Competing in the ICCES Summer Tour for the first time and bringing home four shields is an incredible achievement for Girton. A heartfelt thank you to the teachers who made this trip possible: Mr Furphy, Mr Smalley, Mrs Holmes, Mr Martin, Mr Langan, Mr McGauran, Ms Kerr, Mrs Martin, Mr Smith and Mr Whitsed.
We look forward to the next sports event!
