Literacy

Our Grade 5 and 6 students have been very busy developing their literacy skills across reading, spelling and writing. In spelling, students have been working with the Sounds Write program, focusing on the /l/ in words such as ankle, helping them understand how sounds are represented in different spelling patterns. This systematic approach supports students in strengthening their decoding and spelling accuracy, building confidence when reading and writing new words.

During our oral reading fluency sessions, students have been linking their literacy learning with our Inquiry topic on energy. Through a range of texts, students have explored ideas about how energy changes our lives and the different ways electricity is produced. As they read, they have been practising expressive and accurate reading while also expanding their vocabulary with topic-specific words related to energy, power and electricity.

In writing, year 5 students recently completed the NAPLAN writing assessment, which focused on narrative writing. Students demonstrated their ability to plan and structure engaging stories, using descriptive language and well-developed characters. Last week, students continued building their narrative writing skills as they prepared for their Cold Write, where they independently applied the writing strategies they had been practising in class.

Maths

In mathematics our students have been developing their mathematical understanding across a range of engaging and practical topics. In our work on 3D shapes, students have explored how these shapes can be represented and analysed in different ways, including investigating cross-sections. Through hands-on activities and visual models, students examined what happens when shapes such as prisms and pyramids are sliced, identifying the resulting 2D shapes and recognising patterns in their properties.

Students have also been strengthening their skills in converting units of measurement, working with length, mass and capacity. They have been learning how to move between units (for example, millimetres to centimetres or grams to kilograms) and applying these skills to real-world contexts. This has supported students in developing accuracy and flexibility when solving problems involving measurement.

In addition, a strong focus has been placed on solving worded multiplication and division problems. Students have practised constructing problems and perfecting how to word them accurately to ensure that the person solving the problem can understand the question being asked.

Our students continue to work on their times tables on a daily basis and they have been practising their skills from earlier in the year with their Daily Reviews.

Discovery Day

Our Grade 6 students recently attended a Discovery Day at Western Port Secondary College as part of their transition to high school. Throughout the day, students participated in a variety of engaging classes, including English, Maths, Art and Drama giving them a taste of what learning in secondary school will be like. They had the opportunity to explore new environments, meet teachers, and experience different teaching styles. It was fantastic to see students step out of their comfort zones, show enthusiasm, and embrace this exciting next step in their learning journey.
