Year 3/4 Classroom Update

 

Students in Year 3/4 have been engaged in a range of rich learning experiences across our core subjects over the past few weeks.

 

In Reading, students recently completed the novel Matilda by Roald Dahl. Throughout this unit, students explored the text through guided reading and class discussions, focusing on identifying important literary features such as character development, descriptive language, humour, exaggeration and narrative structure. Students examined how Roald Dahl uses these techniques to engage the reader and develop memorable characters and events. To conclude the unit, students watched the film adaptation of Matilda, which provided an opportunity to compare and contrast the novel and the movie. Students discussed similarities and differences between the two texts, deepening their understanding of how stories can be interpreted and presented in different formats.

In Writing, students have recently completed our unit on narrative writing. Throughout this unit, students learned about the key components of a narrative, including orientation, complication and resolution. They explored how authors develop interesting characters, settings and problems within their stories, while also focusing on using descriptive vocabulary to engage the reader. Students worked through the full writing process, including planning, drafting, editing and revising their work. Over the past week, students have finalised and published their narratives, demonstrating their ability to apply the writing techniques they have been learning throughout the unit.

 

In Mathematics, students are currently focusing on addition, with particular attention on column addition and the development of mental addition strategies. Students are learning how to accurately solve addition problems involving larger numbers using the column method, while also building their ability to mentally calculate sums by applying efficient strategies such as partitioning numbers and making friendly numbers. The purpose of this learning is to strengthen students’ number sense and develop confidence and accuracy when working with addition in a variety of mathematical contexts.

 

In Science, students have begun exploring the concept of temperature and measurement. As part of this learning, students are investigating how temperature can be measured and recorded using thermometers. They have been discussing the importance of temperature in everyday life and developing their understanding of how scientists measure and compare temperature in different environments. Through this unit, students are building their scientific observation skills while learning how measurement tools help us gather accurate data about the world around us.

 

It has been wonderful to see students engaging enthusiastically with their learning across all subject areas.

 

3/4A Thoughts about Matilda;

 

'I thought the book was really good because there was lots of plot twists with Miss Honey's aunt being Miss Trunchbull.'  -  Sonny

'I thought it was really good and funny because the newt fall on Miss Trunchbull and she was shaking and it was really funny.'  -  Lillie

 

'I liked all the funny bits, like when Matilda glued the hat onto her dad's head.'  -  Lucy

 

'Matilda is very brave and she stands up for herself and others.'  -  Luna

NAPLAN

Our Year 3 students have completed their NAPLAN testing, with all participating students approaching these tests with a positive and calm attitude. Results for these assessments are due to be released later in the year, around June or July. These results will allow our school to determine strengths and areas for improvement, both for individual students and the student cohort as a whole. We can then provide a more tailored teaching and learning program for students, designed to improve student outcomes.
