Year 5 News

Our Learning Celebrations
Literacy - Text Studies
In recent text study sessions, students practised using expression and intonation when responding to questions through quick writes. They made connections between their own knowledge and the themes in the story and explored characters’ inner thoughts.
Students also learnt how authors show the passage of time by identifying words and phrases that signal time passing and by plotting key events on a timeline. They identified examples of figurative language in the text and discussed how it helps create mood and add meaning to the story.
Behind The News
Behind the News (or more commonly known as BTN) is an Australian children's program televised by the ABC. It is an educational news program aimed at 10–13-year-old children. In year 5 suitable stories are selected by the teachers for children to listen to and discuss, often responding to questions verbally or in written form, to clarify and extend their understanding on specific topics and events.
Mathematics
Measurement
Students have developed their understanding of measurement by comparing and ordering lengths, using simple metric conversions, and calculating totals and differences. They applied their knowledge of area and perimeter, exploring how shapes can have the same area but different perimeters, or the same perimeter but different areas.
Students are currently investigating mass by estimating, measuring, and comparing objects using appropriate metric units.
Maths Fluency
Children in Year 5 are gaining accuracy and speed practising their times tables daily at school. Hopefully they have also shown you the online program they can access at home, called Times Tables Rockstars, to continue their short, sharp and regular homework practise. The login and password is stored in their homework books. Alternatively, some children may be reciting them out loud, writing them out, or a combination of all 3, to suit their learning styles and time constraints.
Unit of Inquiry
The children have continued their thoughtful exploration of perspective, inspired by the picture book Rosie’s Glasses. The story cleverly uses visual elements, such as shifts between black‑and‑white and colour, expressive characters, and meaningful symbolism to show how our outlook can shape the way we experience the world.
Building on these ideas, students were encouraged to reflect on their own perspectives. They expressed their thinking through detailed drawings and insightful written statements, demonstrating a growing awareness of how different viewpoints can influence feelings, actions, and understanding. It has been wonderful to see their creativity and empathy shine through this learning.
Division Swimming
Congratulations to Maya, who proudly represented our school at the Division Swim Meet in Carnegie as our schools only competitor. We are incredibly proud of her effort and achievements.
NAPLAN
Well done to our Year 5 students on their efforts during the NAPLAN assessments. They approached the weeks with focus, resilience and a positive attitude, doing their best in each test. We are very proud of the way students supported one another and showed confidence in their learning. Congratulations to all students for the effort and persistence you demonstrated throughout the NAPLAN period.
SAT Speeches
Many of our Year 5 students recently took to the front of their classrooms to present their speeches for the Student Agency Team (SAT) representative role. SAT is a leadership group made up of one representative from each grade, working together from Years 3 to 5. These students meet regularly to plan fundraisers, share ideas, and help drive positive improvements across our school.
This year’s Year 5 candidates spoke with confidence, passion, and a genuine desire to make a difference. Their speeches were filled with thoughtful suggestions and creative ideas aimed at making our school an even better place to learn and grow. It was inspiring to see so many students eager to take on a leadership role and contribute to our school community.
What We Are Learning Next
Mathematics
Fractions
In the coming weeks the year 5 children will be focusing on building on their understanding of fractions. They will be identifying equivalent fractions, represent improper and mixed numbers, order fractions using number lines, compare fractions and identify similarities and differences.
Literacy
We will explore how authors use language to develop characters, employ foreshadowing, and incorporate symbols to convey meaning. We will also examine how a third-person narrative offers multiple perspectives on the story’s events.
What a big couple of weeks the Year 5's have had! We are very proud of their effort and hard work!
