News From the Classroom

SCIENCE

This term, students have been learning about variables and cause-effect relationships. Students have been building their skills in writing a Hypothesis (prediction). We have spent many lessons focusing on how to be SAFE in the Science Lab as well as getting familiar with the different types of equipment we will be using in science. We are all looking forward to conducting many prac's throughout next term as we explore Chemistry and Physics.

ART CLUB

Art Club with Ms. Pizzey and Jaime has been a great addition to our lunchtime activities, with students coming together to explore their creativity and enjoy making art in a relaxed environment. Recently, students experimented with creating animal chatterboxes and produced drawings that used multiple design ideas to bring their artwork to life.

Art Club is also a space where students can share their ideas and help shape future activities, with many already offering suggestions for new projects. Most importantly, it provides a welcoming place for students to connect with like-minded peers, build social connections, and enjoy being creative together during lunchtime.

HUMANITIES

Students were working in groups to research different religions that make up Australia's multifaith society. Students researched the top 4 religions in Australia according to the census and then worked together to outline how our multi-faith society promotes diversity and inclusion.

MATH

Year 7 students have been developing their understanding of order of operations, integers, and number sense through structured “I Do, We Do, You Do” lessons.

They have enjoyed interactive activities such as integer challenges, collaborative tasks, and creating number sentences with a target of −12, with some extending to multi-step problems. We continue to support all learners through scaffolding and discussion-based activities like “Always, Sometimes, Never.”

Students will complete their first Common Assessment Task (CAT) this week, and we are pleased with their progress and effort.

PROGRESS REPORTS / CONFERENCES

All parents-careers have by now hopefully looked at the first cycle progress reports via compass. Students recently completed a reflection in PEARL and were able to identify aspects that they were able to celebrate in their learning. It is important that parents-careers make a note in their planner to attend our first student-parent-carers conferences on Thursday 14th May beginning from 11.15am through to 7pm. Further information will come out in early Term 2 but parents-carers will be expected to make a F2F online booking during this time.

To support parents-carers further in understanding the progress reports please see below an outline of what each of the terms mean:

Consistently: The student demonstrates this skill or behaviour independently, at a high standard, and in every lesson.

Usually: The student demonstrates this skill or behaviour most of the time, with only occasional reminders needed.

Sometimes: The student demonstrates this skill or behaviour inconsistently and requires regular prompting or support.

Rarely: The student demonstrates this skill or behaviour infrequently and requires significant support and guidance.

We have also developed a student-friendly version that studnets were able to access.

Consistently: I show this all the time without needing reminders.

Usually: I show this most of the time, with only a few reminders.

Sometimes: I show this some of the time, but I need reminders to stay on track.

Rarely: I don’t show this often enough and need lots of reminders and help to improve/focus.
