YEAR 5

FROM THE TEAM

Grade 5 students have had a busy and engaging time across all their learning areas this week. In Reading, they have continued exploring the text Eureka, working on identifying main ideas, summarising key information, and developing their understanding of important vocabulary through discussion and context clues. Students have been encouraged to justify their thinking using evidence from the text and to build deeper comprehension through group conversations.

In Writing, students have begun their new Talk for Writing unit based on Clock Close. They have been immersing themselves in the text, exploring its language features, and use of descriptive devices such as similes, metaphors, and personification. Students will soon begin innovating on the model to create their own imaginative pieces.

In Inquiry, students rotated through four engaging stations that introduced them to different aspects of life in 1800s Australia. These included the Gold Rush, the Eureka Stockade, bushrangers, and the experiences of Chinese migrants. Through short activities and discussions, students gained a snapshot of each topic and began thinking about different perspectives during this time period. Over the coming weeks, students will select one of these areas to investigate more deeply, developing their research and critical thinking skills.

• We are learning to develop our vocabulary by learning the definition of unfamiliar words.
• We are learning to explore and develop our understanding of one aspect of life in 1800s Australia – Bushrangers, Gold Rush, Eureka Stockade or  Chinese Migrants. 
• We are learning to discuss and identify what our own and other’s personal and cultural strengths are.
