YEAR 4

FROM THE TEAM

This week has been a vibrant mix of creativity, critical thinking and skill‑building across our learning areas.

In Inquiry, students stepped into the role of world‑builders, designing their own countries complete with unique flags, climates, flora and fauna. Their imaginations have been working overtime as they apply their understanding of environmental features to bring their nations to life.

In Reading, we explored Mirror by Jeannie Baker, focusing on finding key ideas and summarising the text. Students have been developing their ability to identify what truly matters in a story and express it clearly in their own words.

In Writing, we continued working with our mentor text “Should the Big Bad Wolf Be Banished?” as we unpacked the structure and features of a discussion piece. Students are learning how to present different viewpoints and support them with reasons.

In Maths, we’ve been diving deeper into fractions. Students practiced identifying and representing halves, quarters, thirds, fifths and tenths of collections, while also learning to explain the roles of the numerator and denominator.

In Wellbeing, our focus has been on understanding expectations and values. We explored what Respect looks like at our school and how we can identify, describe and display this important behavioral expectation in our daily actions. 

Students are already very excited about our upcoming Term 2 camp. Please continue to keep an eye on Compass over the next couple of weeks for further details and information about the deposit payment.

INQUIRY

We are learning to create a country of our own using the knowledge we have learnt about, major geographical divisions, different climate zones around the world and flora and fauna. 

READING

• We are learning to use prefixes and suffixes and their meaning.
• We are learning to understand how authors use similes, metaphors and onomatopoeia to make stories interesting using our new text “The Boy who tried to shrink his name”.

WRITING

• We are innovating our Talk for Write Text  ‘Should the big bad wolf be banished’ 

   

MATHS

• We are learning to build an understanding of equivalent fractions  
• We are learning to build an understanding of identifying equivalent Fractions on number lines 
• We are learning to order mixed numerals with the same denominator on a number line 
• We are learning to convert improper fractions to mixed numerals. 

WELLBEING

• We are learning to explain the terms ‘expectation’ and ‘value’  
• We are learning to identify, describe and display our school behavioural expectation of Respect.
