Year 10 Pathways Planning.
Over the past couple of weeks our Yr 10 students have been out on a couple of whole year level excursions to support our students with their next steps in their career life journey. We headed out to the Royal Melbourne Show Grounds for the Careers Expo and this week groups visited University Campuses to provide some insight into what University is like. Both of these events are designed to feed into the student's pathway planning and to support the work students are doing in their Yr 10 Inspire class, all of which will culminate in the students presenting their pathways plan in a three-way conference in term 3.
Equipping Students to navigate their way in the world of work.
As important as pathway planning is for students an equally important part of our work with students in career development space is to develop the understanding of how to navigate the world of work. Parents and students will have no doubt heard that our current and future generations will face significant change in career life journey, and that this generation will have a greater diversity of roles than any previous generation. It is also true that some of the roles our students will take on in the future do not currently exist. With this in mind we need to prepare our students with an understanding of this future, and to be skillful in the way the navigate their way through this reality. Many of the discussion I have with the students (both as a cohort, and individually) focus around the concepts shown in the graphic below. These concepts are hoped to provide our students with a foundation upon which to create some agency for themselves as they navigate their future.
At our visit to La Trobe the students heard from two former DVC students about their journeys to this point, with Sophie a recent graduate and current La Trobe students able to illustrate to the students how she had made a dramatic change to career journey after a chance event, demonstrating first hand to the students the above competencies in action.
Yr 9 My Career Insights Profiling
Yr 9 students will be participating in DET initiative My Career Insights. Parents need to provide consent for their student to participate in the full program. The full program sees the students undertake the completion of a series of questionnaires and psychometric tests, which combined are used to generate a “Career Profile” for students. This is supported by an external consultant conducting a counselling session with the student to discuss their results. Parents of Yr 9 students are asked to provide consent for this event on compass.
