Being Well at Magill

Hello Magill Families,

Welcome to Week 6's Wellbeing instalment as we continue sharing helpful resources from URSTRONG about the Language of Friendship. This week, we're focusing on Sessions 4 and 5: ‘Healthy vs Unhealthy Friendships’ and ‘How to Put Out Friendship Fires’.

Healthy VS Unhealthy Friendships

Overview

Some friendships bring out the best in us, some bring out the worst! Help your children learn the difference.

Objective

This session is focused on helping children recognise the qualities and attributes that help to create a healthy friendship, strengthening their social-awareness. Through the Friend-o-meter, a visual tool that helps children think about whether a friendship is healthy or unhealthy, kids start to create social boundaries in their lives and recognise that not all relationships are good for us. This session gets kids thinking critically about their friendships, helping to paint a picture in their mind about what great friendships look like and the importance of surrounding themselves with people who have a positive impact on them.

How to Put Out Friendship Fires

Overview

Conflict with a friend = a Friendship Fire®. Let’s teach your child how to put those Fires out – not make them bigger!

Objective

This session introduces the children to the Friend-o-cycle, which is a visual tool that depicts the normal cycle of a healthy friendship. With a relationship centering on trust and respect, kids learn that Friendship Fires® can be put out through an open, honest conversation. They learn, step-by-step, how to Talk-it-Out so they can move beyond the conflict and let it go with a goal of keeping friendships in the healthy zone of the Friend-o-meter. This session focuses on the skills portion of managing conflict and kids get an opportunity to put their skills to practice through common scenarios.

Best wishes,
