STEM Captains Term 2 Update – What We've Been Learning
This term in STEM, students across the school have been working on exciting hands-on projects that combine science, technology, engineering, and creativity.
Here's a look at what each year level has been up to:
Years 5 and 6 – Light-Up Sculptures
In Years 5 and 6, students have been learning how to build electric circuits and use them to make sculptures that light up and move! This project combines science with art, and students are designing carefully to make sure everything works properly.
They’ve had to think about where to place batteries, wires, switches, and motors so their sculptures function correctly. If the plan isn’t right, the sculpture won’t work, so testing and adjusting have been a big part of the learning. The students are very excited to see their creations come to life!
Years 3 and 4 – Spinning Art with Spin Bots
Students in Years 3 and 4 have been learning about the effects of forces on objects and have built their own spin bots—simple machines that spin a piece of card to create amazing circular art. They made their bots using small motors, batteries, and everyday materials.
This activity helped them learn about circuits and motion in a fun and creative way. As Harper, Ava, and Myra from 3D said, “It’s fun to build, and it’s cool how you can just make a creation from simple materials that spin and assist you in drawing.”
Years 1 and 2 – Exploring Sounds and Vibrations
Our learners in Years 1 and 2 have been exploring the world of sound and vibrations. They have explored things such as how vibrations make sounds and sounds make vibrations, how far sound can travel in different directions, and which materials insulate sounds. Next, they are going to use their knowledge of sound to build and make their own unique instruments.
Foundation – Making and Describing Sounds
The Foundations have also been exploring sounds by learning about how they can change by using different actions and techniques. They have used different materials to compare sounds, and described sounds using pitch and volume. Now, they are working towards making their own ‘foley board’ to make and produce sound effects for a short story.
