Reporting Achievement in Mathematics

Numeracy Update

Changes to Mathematics Reporting – Semester 1, 2025

From Semester 1, 2025, all Victorian government schools, including FPS, will be using the revised Mathematics Curriculum 2.0. This update changes how your child’s achievement in mathematics is reported.

Instead of separate scores for different strands, your child will now receive one overall achievement score for mathematics. Progress will not be shown in the Semester 1 report, as this is the first time using the new curriculum. Progress data will appear in future reports.

To determine this single score, teachers use a triangulated approach to assessment. This means they consider evidence of learning from multiple sources. Some of the resources used by teachers at FPS to assess students in Mathematics include:

  • Teacher observations: Regular monitoring of how students engage with tasks and apply mathematical thinking in class
  • PAT Maths Adaptive: A standardised online test that adjusts to each student’s level to measure skills across key areas of maths.
  • Essential Assessment Adaptive Tests: Tailored assessments that identify student strengths and areas for growth.
  • Mathematics Online Interview: A one-on-one assessment tool used especially in early years to deeply explore student understanding
  • Student work samples: What students make, say, do, and write during lessons, including problem-solving tasks, projects, written explanations, and practical activities.

By combining these different forms of assessment, teachers build a comprehensive understanding of each student’s mathematical achievement. This enables them to provide a single score that reflects not just test results, but also the depth of thinking, application, and growth shown in daily learning.

The move to Mathematics Curriculum 2.0 is designed to help teachers tailor their programs more effectively, supporting students to connect mathematical ideas within and beyond the classroom.
