Principal's Report

A Busy Fortnight
You have probably noticed an influx of events dropping into your Compass feed over recent days – a reflection of all the exciting activities taking place in and around the school.
Student Events
- Foundation students have been learning about fire safety during visits from local fire fighters.
- Foundation & Year 1 students were fortunate to have a paramedic visit who gave some first aid tips and the opportunity to look inside the ambulance. Thank you to parent Jasmin Witenden for arranging this visit.
- Year 2 students participated in a mindfulness, ‘Mind and Body excursion’ last Friday.
- Year 3 have enjoyed a visit from graphic novel illustrator, Brett Cardwell.
- Year 3 & 4 have their concert on Thursday night, Fairfieldpalooza!
- Year 4 – 6 will be heading off to Collingwood Athletics Track on Wednesday for our House Athletics Carnival.
- Year 5 have started their alternative sports program – taekwondo.
- Year 6 are going to Melbourne Museum and IMAX for an excursion next Wednesday.
- The whole school will be participating in ‘Wear It Yellow Day’ on Thursday.
I am grateful to staff for their efforts in planning and organising these events.
Parent Events
- Trivia Night tickets sold out quickly, with extra tickets released due to high demand. We are currently working through the waitlist. If you do receive an email with an offer of waitlist tickets, please respond if you don't need yours – there are others waiting for an offer.
- Our parent choir has been holding their ‘Sing and Sip’ sessions at the Grandview Hotel.
- There have been a number of year level social nights for parents.
- ArtForAll committee meetings are up and running.
If you have any space in your diary, everyone in our community is welcome to attend our parent events.
Curriculum Day – Friday 30 May
School is closed to our students this Friday as we have our second curriculum day of the year.
For our teachers, the focus of the day is on Literacy. Facilitator, Lyn Stone – a linguist and literacy and language specialist, will deliver a full-day professional learning session focused on deepening teacher knowledge and practice in the explicit teaching of writing.
TeamKids will be operating all day on Friday – remember to book your child’s place in the program.
School Council Secretary – We Need Someone!
Our 2025 school council has held two successful meetings, discussing a range of matters related to the ongoing governance of our school. A report from this month’s meeting will be available in the next newsletter.
At this stage, we require somebody to take on the role of school council secretary. I am therefore asking if there is anybody in our community who would be willing to take on this role, and join the school council in a co-opted capacity (no nominations nor voting necessary). There will be a thorough handover with the previous school council secretary to support this position. The role of secretary involves:
- Attending eight school council meetings during the school year (Mondays 6.30 – 8.30pm). There is no requirement to join a subcommittee.
- Taking minutes during the meetings.
- Collating and circulating school council papers.
If you are interested in taking on this role, and joining a positive and vibrant school council, it would be great to have you on board. Please email me for more information or to express your interest.
Staff Absences
We are at that time of year when students and staff get bugs, colds and all of those other nasty illnesses. We have had a higher than normal rate of staff absence and have been fortunate to be able to book replacement teachers in most instances. A friendly reminder to please keep your child home if they are unwell, for the health of everyone.
Principal’s Morning Tea
Every term, I host a morning tea in the staff room after drop-off and all parents are invited to pop by. This is an opportunity to find out what is happening about the school, ask questions and learn more about FPS.
This term's morning tea is on Friday 6 June, from 9 – 10am in the staff room.
I look forward to seeing you at one of our many school events!
