Year 5/6s dive into Australia's past exploring Ned Kelly and the Gold Rush

This term, our Year 5 and 6 students are taking a deep dive into a fascinating chapter of Australian history through their Reading and HASS lessons. The focus? The dramatic tale of Ned Kelly and the broader backdrop of the Australian Gold Rush.

In Reading, students are exploring the life and legend of Ned Kelly, Australia's most infamous bushranger. The historical fiction novel, The Black Snake, gives different perspectives on Kelly’s life - was he a hero, a villain, or something in between? These discussions have sparked thoughtful debates and strong engagement with themes such as justice, national identity, and resistance.

Meanwhile, in HASS, the students are learning how the discovery of gold in the 1850s transformed Australia, bringing wealth, migration and significant democratic change. They are realising the connections between the conditions of the time and the hardships faced by families such as the Kellys.

By linking these two areas of study, students are learning more about Australia’s past and the lasting impact these events have had on our national identity.
