Wise words with...

Where is Truth to be Found?

Telling the truth has become seemingly complicated in our modern world. There are many places we can look to see that misrepresenting the truth has become common. This may involve the telling of lies, misrepresenting information or deliberately deceiving others.

In 2016 the term “fake news” was coined to describe how the media, in its various forms, provides disinformation to deceive others. The term “fake news” has been applied to many contexts including to politicians’ statements and to social media platforms.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has revealed that in 2023 $2.74 billion was lost by Australians to scams. Scams rely on deceiving people in such a way as to cause them to pay money, often at great cost to themselves, to fraudulent endeavours.

Of course there is also a lack of truth in personal relationships. Between colleagues at work, in sporting teams and in families.

Regardless of the context, lies often have the aim of presenting material in such a way as to benefit the perpetrator of the lie. Whether that means gaining votes for a particular politician, financial gain or seeking to present ourselves in a more favourable light by covering fault or exaggerating success.

In a world of misinformation and deception Jesus continues to make the claim, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”Jesus is the truth because he reveals to us the truth about ourselves and God. As we face a barrage of misinformation about ourselves and God we need to test that information against the truths not only taught but also lived out by Jesus.

Staff at Nowra Christian School share a biblical world view. A way of thinking that sees the world as being created and sustained by God. This way of thinking is challenged in popular culture including films, TV shows and novels. Teachers seek to expose the lies concerning God and people that our culture tells us by exploring God’s perspective as revealed in the Bible.

In declaring himself the “way, the truth and the life” Jesus gave a framework to think and live with freedom and joy knowing that in him there is no deception.
