This year we are welcoming a training Guide Dog into our school community, Ranger.

We are excited to have Ranger on campus one day per week at BHS. Ranger is from Guide Dogs Victoria and is being raised by one of our teaching staff members, Laura Spencer. Ranger may be seen around the school, wearing his Guide Dog in training vest. He will be building up to regularly attend a couple of classes during his time here. Students and parents of classes that this may occur in have been notified. Ranger is not a wellbeing dog. He is attending the school to gain experience in a busy school.

A reminder to students if they see Ranger around the school to follow the below guidelines:

1: You say Hello to the person, not the dog.

2: We give lots of space when passing the dog.

3: We keep moving and don’t stand around and stare.

4: Don’t pat or ask to pat the dog.

5. Let the handler know if you think there is a problem or the dog is not doing the right thing.

Guide Dogs Victoria provides comprehensive support, training, and mobility services to Victorians with low vision or blindness, enabling independence and community participation. There are over 450,000 people with low vision or blindness in Australia, and this number is set to increase significantly due to an ageing population and the rise of diabetes. Discussing Ranger and Guide Dogs and their role at home with your child may help them to understand Ranger’s important role in the future.
