Middle Learning Community

We have had another busy two weeks in the MLC. Thank you to all the people who attended the 3-Way Chats. It was wonderful to meet so many of you and celebrate your child’s learning. We look forward to supporting your child’s growth this year.

Year 3

The Year 3 students were very excited to welcome Mr. Brown back into Year 3 on Monday. All of the students should be so proud of their flexibility and resilience over the first 5 weeks of the year.

This week we started SpellEx - our new spelling program. SpellEx is a comprehensive, whole-class spelling program that will develop students’ understanding of the English spelling system. We had lots of great conversations throughout our 3-Way chats about reading at home. The students are encouraged to borrow a ‘Good-Fit’ book from the library every Friday. The expectation is that they are then reading for 20 minutes each day.

In Maths, we finished our Counting & Place Value unit and have started Addition & Subtraction.

Year 4

In our SpellEx program, students have learned about the long vowel sound /a/ and the handy hints to remember which letter combinations to use. Students have also learned about the drop ‘e’ suffix rule and learning some of the tricky/useful words – again, favourite, straight and beginning.

In Literacy, students have continued reading our novel, Kensuke’s Kingdom, and have now started working on a persuasive writing piece about deforestation.

In Maths, students have finished their Fractions unit. Students have now started our unit on Time, where we will be looking at ‘am’ and ‘pm’, calculating elapsed time and calculating start and finish times.

If your child is completing their Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist this year, we are having a meeting on Tuesday, 24th March at 5pm to talk about all the essential information and the process of Sacramental participation. This will be held in the Staffroom.

We are very excited to share that the Year 4 class will be participating in an international correspondence project with a partner primary school in Italy.  This project will connect our students with students from the “Piero Angela” Primary School in Bellinzago Novarese, a small town near Milan. Through exchanging letters, students will develop their English communication skills while learning about another culture and building meaningful connections with peers overseas. These letters will be proofread by the teachers before anything is sent. The letters will be scanned and emailed.
