Year 2 News

LITERACY
At the start of the term, students will focus on revising literacy routines and expectations within their new class. After our start up program, they will then participate in a 60-minute phonics lesson each day, designed to strengthen their reading and writing skills. Grade 2s will further develop their reading comprehension through an author study of texts by Mem Fox. As they explore her works, they will begin creating short narratives of their own, inspired by the characters, themes and style found in Mem Fox’s stories.
Grade 2 students will also explore nonfiction texts to understand the structures and features of this genre, with a particular focus on texts about geography. This learning will support students in writing their own information reports on the topic.
MATHEMATICS
At the start of the term, students engaged in a variety of mathematics activities to build their confidence and encourage mathematical risk-taking. They applied their prior knowledge to problem-solving tasks across different areas, including number and algebra, as well as measurement and geometry.
Following this, students began their first focus topics for the term: Place Value and Duration. In Place Value, they are developing their understanding of ten as a countable unit, enabling them to use groups of ten to count more efficiently and strengthen their overall number sense with two-digit numbers. Place Value will continue until the end of term. In Duration, students are developing their understanding of the months of the year in sequence, along with the concept of ordinal numbers. Throughout this unit, the Grade 2 students have been learning how to use calendars effectively. They are practising how to read calendars and use them to identify and keep track of important dates and events.
Students will also undertake shorter units on 2D Shapes and Data. During the 2D Shapes unit, they will identify familiar shapes in their environment and explore real-life objects that represent these shapes. They will also compare shapes by recognising their similarities and differences. During their Data unit, students will be learning about using tally marks to record data whilst observing events.
SCIENCE
Welcome back to Science for Term 1. In Science this term, students will be focusing on Biological Science. The topic we will be covering is called ‘Features of Survival in Plants and Animals’. Students will be learning that plants and animals have external features that perform different functions to enable their survival; in plants these features include roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruit, bulbs, trunks and branches while different features in animals enable them to move, breathe, eat and respond to their environment. Throughout this term, students will:
learn that animals have features that help them survive in their environment and these features help animals access air, water, food, and shelter
use scientific diagrams to show these features
connect specific animal features to survival in different environments
match the survival features of plants with their functions on a scientific diagram
learn that water flows from plants' roots to their leaves
investigate how different features impact water loss in plants
write a prediction, record their observations, and write a conclusion reflecting on their results of a science experiment
learn plant features have different jobs that help a plant survive in its surroundings.
LOTE-AUSLAN
Welcome to Grade 2 Auslan 2026! During Term 1 we will learn about: On My Holidays, Countries, HOLM NMF – Location, Morning Routine, Lost in the City, A Trip to the Museum, Water – Bodies of Water, A Visit from Grandpa, Numbers #3, Revision (Spinning Wheel).
We will learn new signs that can combine with previously taught signs to extend our Auslan communication, from individual signs to phrases. Videos including fun excursions and games, with lesson activities for practice, will continue to be our focus this term.
As the lessons progress, the students will be developing skills in both signing (Expressive) and understanding others’ signs (Receptive).
Some of the lesson activities will give the students an opportunity to practice fingerspelling and reading back fingerspelling.
ART
Welcome to Grade 2 Art! This term, students will be settling into the art room and learning routines and expectations, including taking care of materials, using tools safely and showing positive learning behaviours.
We will start the term with students learning to use pattern, shape and colour to create an artwork that shows something about themselves, encouraging creativity and personal expression.
The main focus for Term 1 is Colour Theory. Students will revise the primary colours (red, blue and yellow) and learn how to mix them to create secondary colours (orange, green and purple). They will explore a range of art materials, including paint and learn about warm and cool colours in their artworks.
Students will also view artworks by different artists to explore how colour can be used in creative ways. We are looking forward to seeing the creativity and wonderful artworks created by our Grade 2 students this term!
P.E
Welcome back to Physical Education for Term 1! This term in Physical Education, our Grade 2 students are continuing to develop their basic movement and balancing skills, building on what they have learned in previous years. Students will refine their throwing and catching skills, working both independently and with a partner to improve accuracy, timing, and consistency. They will also focus on more advanced ball handling skills, including controlled bouncing, effective passing, and maintaining control while moving at different speeds. Through a range of soccer-based activities and games, students will apply these skills in game situations while developing teamwork, problem solving, and fair play. We are excited to see our Grade 2 students challenge themselves and continue to grow this term.
